2024 — Reconstructing Herbert Marcuse's Theory of ImperialismRésumé

2024 — Style and process in the magnificat cycle of Nicolas GombertRésumé

2024 — Audible Others: Syrian Music and Aural Poetics in LebanonRésumé
This thesis documents emergent Syrian music in Lebanon, considering rural and urban displacement trajectories through sound. Examining traditional and cosmopolitan musical tendencies in Beirut and the refugee camps of the Beqaa Valley along the Syrian border, it looks at the tension between the preservation and transformation of the Syrian musical heritage. Whether played to remember or played to forget, music sheds light on a double bind—retaining the past to sustain cultural identities and revive collective memory, or widening one’s repertoire by integrating transnational influences. At a time of deepening precarity, this research discusses xenophobia in a Lebanon post-collapse and at … Lire la suite

2024 — Forward-Backward Extended DMD with an Asymptotic Stability ConstraintRésumé
In many cases, identifying a model of a nonlinear system directly from data is preferable toderiving one from physics. Such an approach is often referred to as system identification ordata-driven modeling. In particular, the Koopman operator allows a nonlinear system to bemodeled in a linear fashion from data. This is achieved by representing the nonlinearities ofthe system with a set of lifting functions, which enables the Koopman operator to propagatelifted snapshots forward in time by one time step. However, when the Koopman operator isused to identify a system from noisy data, the resulting Koopman model develops a bias andhas the … Lire la suite

2024 — Supporting self-regulation in classrooms: The roles of emotion regulation, self-regulated learning and instructionRésumé
Elementary-aged students’ self-regulation is an important developmental process that predicts their learning outcomes across time and learning domains. Self-regulatory skills are known to change because of maturation, and exposure to environmental factors like classroom instruction. The current dissertation employs mixed-methods to assess how targets of self-regulation, including emotion regulation (ER) and self-regulated learning (SRL), operate in tandem during mathematics problem-solving, and across time. Findings from a mediated path analysis demonstrated that ER is an antecedent to SRL, and that early phases of SRL predict later phases. To better understand how elementary-aged students’ ER and SRL skills change during the year, … Lire la suite

2024 — Economic analysis of HIV self-testing among key populations in Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, and SenegalRésumé

2024 — Nonsmooth modal analysis of one-dimensional bar systems subject to unilateral contact constraintRésumé

2024 — Integrating Taxonomic and Metabolic Profiling to Understand the Human Gut MicrobiomeRésumé
The gut microbiome plays a critical role in the establishment and maintenance of human health. Metabolites are the language used in the chemical dialogue within the microbial community as well as between microbes and their host. For example, microbial-derived tryptophan metabolites can significantly affect the host immune system and are known to be involved in many complex diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and type II diabetes (T2D). High-resolution global metabolomics paired with microbiome profiling is increasingly used to study host-gut microbiome interactions. However, interpreting these omics data remains challenging. My thesis project aims to develop computational approaches to … Lire la suite

2024 — Sentencing disparity in intimate partner homicide trials in China: a focal concern perspectiveRésumé
Intimate partner homicide (IPH) is a particularly serious criminal offense that positions gender, an extra-legal factor, at the center of the discussion because male and female offenders are said to have very distinct motives when they decide to kill their intimate partners. The Anti-Domestic Violence Law (ADVL) adopted in 2016 declares the political stance of the central government against domestic violence. It defines behaviors of domestic violence and encourages active intervention by the Public Security Bureau (PSB), which invalidates the excuse of police’s inaction. The purpose of this paper is to utilize the focal concern theory, one of the prominent … Lire la suite

2024 — The use of non-invasive brain stimulation to modulate beta waves during movement of the hand in elderly and stroke individualsRésumé
Aging is characterized by a deterioration in reaction time, motor coordination, and motor learning. Previous studies using electroencephalography (EEG) in elderly individuals have shown abnormalities in movement-related beta desynchronization (MRBD) patterns. Some studies also used methods to alter these patterns using non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques such as transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS). Recent studies have revealed the existence of high amplitude transient bursts that might be at the origin of sustained beta oscillatory activity patterns in the motor cortex such as the MRBD and are denoted as beta bursts. However, beta bursts have not been studied as extensively as … Lire la suite

2024 — Application of multimodal techniques in the identification of biomarkers in mild Traumatic Brain InjuryRésumé

2024 — Giving context to voice-hearing: Service user lived experience in an Early Intervention for Psychosis programRésumé
The discipline of psychiatry has inherited a “received view” of auditory-verbal hallucinations (i.e., voice-hearing) which largely stems from the nineteenth-century, the term “hallucinations” having been coined by the French alienist Esquirol in 1817. Starting from this time, hallucinations have been conventionally understood as perceptual events occurring without a corresponding stimulus in the environment. Toward the end of the twentieth century, the Neo-Kraepelinian and biological turn within the discipline of psychiatry contributed to a framing of mental disorder, including that involved with voice-hearing, as bereft of context (e.g., a person's sociocultural background and life history) in terms of how it was … Lire la suite

2024 — Development of a new mouse model to study autoimmune thyroiditisRésumé
Autoimmune thyroiditis, also known as Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), is the primary cause of hypothyroidism in developed countries, affecting eight to ten times more women than men. HT is thought to be caused by the production of autoantibodies that results in thyroid destruction, with commonly identified autoantibodies directed towards the thyroid peroxidase (TPO) and thyroglobulin (TG). However, the immunopathogenesis and genetics of HT remain poorly understood, and proper experimental models are limited. The aim of the research project is to develop a robust experimental autoimmune thyroiditis (EAT) model in mice by improving on immunization methods described in the literatures and/or alternative … Lire la suite

2024 — Gamification as Bridge of Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivations in Chinese Post-secondary EducationRésumé

2024 — Social support provision in young adult friendshipsRésumé
Abstract This dissertation examines social support provision within young adult friendships. During young adulthood, the presence of high-quality friendships is critical for young adult well-being (Buote et al., 2007). This association may in part be explained by the provision of social support, which is both a key resource within young adult friendships (Carbery & Buhrmester, 1998), and may represent an important process through which friendships are maintained (Fehr, 1996). In the two studies presented in this thesis, I use a multi-method approach to examine supportive interactions between young adult friends to assess how support behaviours and relationship characteristics contribute to … Lire la suite

2024 — PRL2/PTP4A2, a modulator of lymphatic functions and inflammationRésumé

2024 — Nudging anti-corruption norms: The role of anti-corruption clauses in the petroleum sectorRésumé
Despite the global rise in anti-corruption movements and the proliferation of anti-corruption laws, corruption remains prevalent in many regions, with countries struggling to translate laws into effective action. If corruption is viewed as a de facto institution, it becomes evident that there is a need for institutional change supported by political will to combat it effectively. However, resistance from political and economic elites in most countries to anti-corruption reforms prompts the engagement of external actors, such as other states, international organizations, and transnational actors. Acknowledging the limitations of state-centric anti-corruption efforts, this thesis argues that Transnational Corporations (TNCs), as non-traditional … Lire la suite

2024 — “If we have songs to sing, we should sing them now”: the ecopoetry of Karen SolieRésumé
This thesis explores the development of Karen Solie’s ecopoetry across her six poetry collections: Short Haul Engine (2001), Modern and Normal (2005), Pigeon (2009), The Living Option: Selected Poems (2013), The Road in Is Not the Same Road Out (2015), and The Caiplie Caves (2019). By situating her work within the context of prominent ecopoetic and ecocritical theories, the thesis reveals how Solie’s works contribute to the ecopoetic project and resist dominant cultural modes of thought. It argues that Solie creates her own holistic vision of the environment that deconstructs humanity’s assumption of dominance over the natural world. Chapter One … Lire la suite

One of the fundamental questions in physics revolves around the existence of matter in our Universe. To address this question, various approaches have been proposed. One avenue involves investigating the nature of neutrinos, specifically whether they are Dirac or Majorana particles. This investigation focuses on a specific process known as neutrinoless double beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay, in which two neutrons transform into two protons and two electrons without any neutrinos in the final state. Detecting such a decay would not only indicate lepton number violation but also validate the Majorana nature of neutrinos.A proposed experiment named the nEXO Experiment aims to … Lire la suite

Similarly, magnetized liner inertial fusion utilizes a solid liner to compress an initially pre-heated and pre-magnetized plasma, bringing it to fusion conditions.Despite differences in the underlying physics and engineering of these methods, they share a common concern: maintaining the stability of the liner interface during the compression. This project interrogates the aesthetics and construction of identity amidst conditions of racial violence in two novels: Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and Luster by Raven Leilani. I use these novels as a conduit for uncovering how systems of racial and gender oppression are internalized and expressed by those that bear the brunt of them. As such, the resulting work extends beyond the ambit of the novel to interrogate the racial politics of the publishing industry, as well as the role of the white, Western reader in sustaining the racialized status quo of the literary field.
The galliard, one of the most important dances of the late Renaissance, was widespread throughout Europe, and its great virtuosity made it an essential part of dance treatises of that period. However, historians of this dance still wonder about two questions. Firstly, is it possible to identify different melodic styles of the galliard? Secondly, how are galliard music and dance related to each other? Thirdly, are there any criteria that allow us to distinguish between "danceable" galliards and those intended solely for performance without dancers? This thesis aims to answer these three questions through two complementary approaches to analysis: stylometric … Lire la suite

2024 — Shedding light on sub-Neptune formation from the evolution of their orbital period distributionsRésumé
Do sub-Neptunes assemble close to where we see them or do they form full-fledged farther awayfrom their host star then migrate inwards? We address this question by studying the distribution oftheir orbital periods, one of the most fundamental observable parameters. Under migration, planetoccurrence rate decreases towards shorter orbital periods, a feature that can be erased bysubsequent orbital instabilities. Presently, the observed sub-Neptune period distribution is flat, down to 10 days, inside which we see a drop.We present our REBOUND N-body simulation results to demonstrate that these collisionalmergers establish the observed flat orbital period distribution within tens of thousands of years, irrespective of … Lire la suite

This thesis explores one of the distinct strands of liberalism which emerges in the 20th century, developed by political theorist Judith Shklar. In particular, it focuses on her use and integration of literature, and demonstrates the central role which literary works serve in her presentation of a character-based account of liberalism which is committed to realism, toleration, and injustice. The thesis is divided into three sections. The first provides historical context for Shklar and addresses the apparent tension which arises for a character-based account given Shklar’s commitment to pluralism. The second sketches out the various uses of literary works throughout … Lire la suite
