Meraugis l'empopiné, Silence li vallés qui est mescine and Calogrenant la pucele are three characters of three different verse romances of the 13th century (Meraugis de Portlesguez of Raoul de Houdenc, Le Roman de Silence of Heldris de Cornouailles and Claris et Laris), in which the authors address the subject of cross-dressing. This type of disguise, which is fairly widespread in medieval literature, has inspired several medievalists in the field of Gender Studies. This study proposes an in-depth analysis of the concept of imagination in the Essais as it emerges through various occurrences of the words "imagination" and "fantasie" (synonymous in the XVIth century) and their numerous derivatives. By focusing on two fundamental characteristics of this faculty, its "autonomy" and "power of sensory representation", this dissertation argues that Montaigne's idea of imagination, intimately related to man's desire and presumptuousness, is based on an essential ambivalence by which it produces indifferently real or illusory images, representations of truth as well as falsehood. Killing the Business: Affect, Work, and Kayfabe in Professional Wrestling approaches pro wrestling as a “liminal genre” of cultural practice that strategically makes use of and conventionalizes media, work, and sociocultural discourses and practices between events. It investigates how pro wrestling’s generic conventions mediate and pattern pro wrestling’s structures of feeling, and the formalized ways in which the industry operates as an affective economy that generates lived material and social effects (Ahmed, 2014; Berlant, 2008; Chow, 2014). Collections of planktonic copepods of Ungava Bay and central Hudson Strait were made during late June, July and August of 1947, 1949 and 1950. The following twenty-two species have been identified: Calanus finmarchicus, C.hyperboreus, C.helgolandicus, Pseudocalanus minutus , Microcalanus pygmaeus, Gaidius tenuispinus, Aetideopsis rostrata, Pareuchaeta norvegica, P.glacialis, Eurytemora americana, Metridia longa,Pleuromamma robusta, Heterorhabdus norvegicus, Acartia longiremis, A.bifilosa, Oithona similis, Oncaea borealis, Cyc10pina gracilis, C,Schneideri, Monstrilla dubia, M.helgolandica and M,canadensis. This dissertation addresses how a university centre dedicated to the study of diasporic identity represents the constitution of regional, national, and transnational communication networks. The creation and operation of these communicative networks requires individuals to negotiate a myriad of differences, including level of education, socio- and religio-cultural background, and occupation. Context- Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disease. In MS, neural mechanisms are primarily compromised but muscular changes can occur secondary to inactivity. Untangling the relative contributions is a topic of ongoing research. Muscle quality, the ratio of strength to muscle mass, is a measure of a muscle's functional capacity however little is known about its role in the MS population. Why have numerous peace agreements not led to peace? Peacemaking evolves within a specific social, political and economic context involving different actors, numerous issues, and domestic and international constraints. However, political leaders ultimately prioritize the interests of the nation, politicize issues, and initialize policies. The study proposes, first, that the belief system and perceptions of political leaders play an important role in the making of peace by directly influencing the political environment during the implementation phase of peace agreements. In this work, I will be looking at the cross-linguistic restrictions on coda position, especially with regard to sonority and place. I propose that these restrictions can be best captured if we acknowledge two types of constraints; those which restrict the licensing ability of codas, as well as those which set out a relationship between a coda and a following onset. I show that in allowing for this distinction, the contrast between the restrictions on word-internal codas and word-final ones falls out straightforwardly. In this thesis, a numerically efficient three-dimensional finite element scheme is used to analyze arbitrarily-shaped discontinuities in inhomogeneous-dielectric-loaded waveguides. Special emphasis is placed on discontinuity problems in finlines and related structures. A simple but accurate recursive algorithm, the boundary-marching method, for modeling uniform waveguides of arbitrarily-shaped cross-section is developed for the analysis. This algorithm is used to generate the matrix representations of various waveguides, including the unilateral finlines. In this dissertation, we consider some classical problems in source coding theory in general and image sequence coding in particular. Shannon rate-distortion-function (RDF) provides the unbeatable lower bound for a source coder's performance with an arbitrary complexity. In theory, for most cases of interest, the RDF is only achievable in the limit of infinite delay. Practical communication systems impose constraints on the maximum coding delay and complexity. Hence the objective of source coding is to achieve performance closest to the RDF bound for a given delay and complexity. Development of network quality speech coders at 16 kb/s and below is an active research area. This thesis focuses on the study of low-delay Code Excited Linear Predictive (CELP) and tree coders. A 16 kb/s stochastic tree coder based on the (M.L.) search algorithm suggested by lyengar and Kabal and a low-delay CELP coder proposed by AT&T (CCITT 16 kb/s standardization candidate) are examined. This thesis describes an investigation of Hougaard distributions, Hougaard processes and their applications. The aim is to assemble and synthesize known results about the subject, to provide further insight into its theoretical foundations, to extend existing methods and develop some new methods, to discuss and illustrate applications, and finally to motivate other statisticians to make greater use of Hougaard distributions and Hougaard processes in their own investigations. Although the family of Hougaard distributions is relatively unknown, it includes the inverse Gaussian, gamma and positive stable distributions as special cases and these are well known.  Lire la suite

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is an aggressive hematological cancer characterized by uncontrolled proliferation of myeloid cells blocked in differentiation. AML accounts for the highest proportion of adult leukemia deaths in North America and progresses rapidly without treatment. The standard of care for patients without significant medical comorbidities remains myeloablative chemotherapy with cytarabine and daunorubicin, often followed by hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. However, despite this intensive treatment, more than 50% of patients initially achieving remission relapse within 5 years. Some years ago it was customary to discuss a nebulous region of the world called "the north" even though this designation suffered from numerous ambiguities. To eliminate confusion and identify a particular northern portion of the earth, the terms "arctic" and "sub-arctic" were introduced. Thus in searching for common denominators by which they could denote the arctic and sub-arctic, geographers have turned largely to climatic factors. In June, 1959, I entered into a contract with the United States Atomic Energy Commission (Contract No. AT(04-3-315) to direct a programme of human geographical studies in Northwestern Arctic Alaska. These studies were part of the bio-environmental programme for Project Chariot. They were centred on the Eskimo village of Point Hope but included the villages of Noatak and Point Lay. Amadori rearrangement product (ARP) of tryptophan with glucose was synthesized according to a published procedure, and its decomposition was studied at two different concentrations and at two temperatures, 110$ sp circ$C and 140$ sp circ$C over a period of 6 hrs. A RP-HPLC system was developed to separate and quantitate the decomposition products of the ARP. The results indicated that, the ARP can decompose to form the following products, hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), maltol, indole, $ beta$-carbolines (norharman and harman) and tryptophan. The research examines the development of women's prison writing through the journal of the Kingston Prison for Women, Tightwire. The journal enabled the prisoners to articulate their experience of prison for themselves as a specific subject-group, as women and as legal subjects. The research connects the prison writing to alterations in legal discourse which reflect the emergence of women as a specific group. Late blight, caused by the oomycete Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) De Bary, is the most devastating disease affecting the potato, accounting for over six billion United States dollars worldwide each year due to production losses and prevention measures. For many years, synthetic fungicides have been used heavily by potato producers to minimize disease severity and prevent spread. But the incidence of new, more virulent P. infestans genotypes – many of which now fungicide-resistant – has made it increasingly difficult and costly for producers to prevent late blight epidemics. The literature of disturbance ecology reveals that, under present climatic conditions, non-native plants have little or no role in high arctic tundra revegetation. Rather, it has been suggested that indigenous flora, especially long-lived perennial graminoids, are crucial to recovery. However, few long-term data are available on past impacts within productive sedge-meadows in the High Arctic, and none which consider the non-vascular flora. This paper analyzes the liberalization of Venezuela's foreign direct investment (FDI) laws. In the past, Venezuela placed tough restrictions upon the entry and operation of foreign investment. These restrictions were made possible as long as petroleum prices remained high and the country had access to cheap international bank loans. The debt crisis in the 1980s, a drop in commodity prices, and a decrease in international bank loans once again made FDI an attractive source of foreign capital. The frequency variation of various nuclear interactions under lead has been studied by comparing the number of different kinds of stars produced in Ilford G5 emulsion exposed directly to the air, and under 15.1cm and 10.lcm of lead. From these observations the attenuation lengths in lead are found to be: 320 +/- 12g. per cm^2 for all stars; 274 +/- 27g. per cm^2 for stars with charged primaries; 200 +/- 35g. per cm^2 for stars with uncharged primaries, excluding simple evaporation stars. The size-frequency distribution of stars and its relation to the composition of the emulsion is discussed.  Lire la suite

Before the advent of isotopes in biological research, the elements making up the bodies of adult animals were presumed to be more or less static, being replaced only slowly. Food substances, on the other hand, were thought to be rapidly used up and their residues excreted. The use of isotopes soon indicated that the elements comprising all parts or the body had a rate of turnover which varied somewhat, but was often much higher than expected. Environmental documentary was a marginal genre by the late 20th century, but in the 1990s and early 2000s, the genre’s prominence flourished with a boom in the production and prestige of environmentally minded nonfiction film. After 2010, the genre seemingly declines. I argue that this shift does not signal disinterest, but an intriguing destabilization of environmental documentary. With social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram attracting over one billion monthly users, traditional feature-length documentaries screened through festivals make up only a portion of video-based environmental content. Canada has pursued during the postwar period a policy of accelerated capital cost allowances to stimulate private investment. Faster write offs increase a firm's cash flows and hence internal funds available for investment. These allowances reduce government revenues since taxes are deferred. These deferred taxes have grown rapidly and now more attention is being paid to the effects of tax incentive devices on investment and on government revenues. In the thesis non-neoclassical models of investment are employed for an analysis of investment in two manufacturing industries.
