I investigated the effect of defoliation by the gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar L. (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) on the radial growth of tree species that differ in their acceptability as hosts for gypsy moth larvae. Annual growth rings were measured from 1950 to 1992 on increment cores taken from three species: red oak (Quercus rubra L.), a preferred species, sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.), an acceptable species, and white ash (Fraxinus americana L.), an avoided species. Vital sign monitors are indispensable in critical care, enabling clinicians to maintain situational awareness of patient health conditions. However, conventional interfaces have three key limitations: they contribute to alarm fatigue by generating frequent auditory alerts, restrict access to patient information due to their fixed placement, and are not optimized for quick interpretation. Background: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia, systemic inflammation, and increased risk of cardiovascular complications that may require surgical intervention. Increasing evidence suggests that alterations in the gut microbiome contribute to metabolic dysregulation and immune changes in chronic diseases such as T2D. Microbiota-derived metabolites, including short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), are key mediators of host-microbiome interactions that regulate immune function and intestinal homeostasis. A bit more than a quarter of a century ago it rose to face “the endangering elements” from reformist-modernist group who introduced and carried on the ideas of Abduh and Al Afghani in Indonesia. Les hélicases à ARN à boîte DEAD (DDX) constituent la plus grande famille d’hélicases à ARN constituant 37 membres. Ils sont impliqués dans toutes les facettes de l’expression des gènes impliquant l’ARN. L'hélicase DDX comprend un noyau d'hélicase hautement conservé avec des domaines N-terminaux et C-terminaux étendus, qui déterminent leur activité dans le contrôle de l'expression des gènes. La dérégulation des hélicases DDX est impliquée dans divers cancers. The design of 3D microwave devices can be improved by using computational optimization techniques combined with numerical simulations of the electromagnetic field. However, high accuracy field analysis is often computationally expensive and time consuming. One way to cut costs is to vary the accuracy level of the analysis at different stages of the optimization. This idea is based on the premise that the accuracy need not be constant throughout the optimization, and so the numerical analysis can be run more cheaply without compromising design quality. This study examines the meaning of home for 19 Hindu Gujarati immigrant women living in the Montreal suburban municipality of Dollard-des-Ormeaux. Adopting a qualitative approach, this study redefines home as a multiple and dynamic concept, referring not only to the house but also the homeland, neighbourhood, cultural community and even the abstract feeling of belonging or being 'at home.' While this study concentrates on the women's present homes and neighbourhoods, the idea of the home as being reinvented across a variety of spaces and social relationships is a central theme. Cette thèse présente la première exploration de plusieurs estimations d'incertitude avec l'abandon Monte Carlo (MC) dans le contexte de la détection et segmentation d'images médicaux. Les réseaux neuronaux ont démontré la capacité de surpasser les méthodes d'apprentissage automatique traditionnel pour la segmentation d'images provenant de bases de données publiques, particulièrement pour le cas de pathologies. L'identification de lésions dans les images de sclérose en plaques (SP) continue d'être l'exception, surtout pour l'identification de petites lésions. This thesis addresses the problem of automatically detecting people from images. Our work is motivated by, and demonstrated on, an automated video surveillance application that aims to monitor people appearing in a scene. We adopt a machine learning-based approach to detection: first, a two-class classifier that can accurately distinguish cropped person images from all other types of images is automatically learned from examples. It is then used to spot instances of the person class within a given image. We have developed and implemented two detection systems using this approach. L'allergie alimentaire affecte une proportion significative de personnes en Amérique du Nord, mais peu de recherches sociologiques la concernent. Cette thèse explore le renouveau de l'immunothérapie pour l'allergie alimentaire souvent présentée comme un changement de paradigme concernant l’exposition aux allergènes, à favoriser plutôt qu’à éviter. Contrairement aux recherches sur la construction sociale des définitions de l'allergie alimentaire et leur utilisation pour "gouverner" les individus et les populations, cette thèse examine ethnographiquement différentes configurations de pratiques technologiques. The attainment of reproductive function is dependent upon the development of communication between the components of the hypothalamic-pituitary- gonadal axis. The contribution to this process by the pituitary during sexual maturation of the female rat was studied in an in vitrosuperfusion system. Pituitary LH secretion in response to GnRH stimulation was studied at 5-day intervals in rats 10-30 days of age and at first proestrus and estrus. As expected, the size of the response, in terms of area under the IH secretion curve, declined with increasing age. This study examined motivational and emotional influences on medical students' attention to feedback in BioWorld (Lajoie, 2009), a technology-rich environment (TRE) for learning clinical reasoning. Thirty first- and second-year medical and dental students completed questionnaires to measure their achievement goal orientations and then solved and reviewed expert solutions for three endocrinology patient cases in BioWorld. The CYP27B1 enzyme that synthesizes 1alpha,25-(OH) 2D, is expressed in chondrocytes, suggesting that local production of 1alpha,25-(OH)2D could play an autocrine or paracrine role in the differentiation of these cells. To test this hypothesis, we have engineered mutant mice that do not express the Cyp27b1 gene in chondrocytes. This led to increased width of the hypertrophic zone of the growth plate at E15.5, increased bone mass in neonatal long bones, and increased expression of the chondrocytic differentiation markers Indian Hedgehog and PTH/PTHrP receptor. In the hospital setting, infant pain is frequently poorly diagnosed and managed. In the present study we investigated the behavioural response to severe pain in the developing nervous system as well as the degree to which morphine can produce adequate analgesia. We describe the behavioural response in 3 and 15 day old rat pups to intraplantar injection of formalin at concentrations capable of inducing c-Fos. These concentrations are 10-fold higher than that necessary to evoke continuous pain behaviour over a period 40--60 minutes. Supersonic inlet starting by mass spillage is studied theoretically and numerically in the present thesis. A quasi-one-dimensional, quasi-steady theory is developed for the analysis of flow inside a perforated inlet. The theory results in closed-form relations applicable to flow starting by the mass spillage technique in supersonic and hypersonic inlets. The theory involves three parameters to incorporate the multi-dimensional nature of mass spillage through a wall perforation. Mass spillage through an individual slot is studied to determine these parameters; analytical expressions for these parameters are derived for both subsonic and supersonic flow conditions. CO2 is an important regulator of cerebral blood flow (CBF). Sustained hypercapnia results in a transient rapid CBF rise in newborns with respiratory disorders; however, contrary to adults, the secondary effects of hypercapnia especially the decrease in blood pH, do not seem to reset (Brubakk et al., 1987). Acute hypercapnia and associated acidosis cause a significant rise in nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandins (PG) levels, which in turn affect early CBF changes. However, the mechanism(s) and their mediator(s) in prolonged hypercapnic CBF fluctuations remain elusive. The ubiquity of free boundary problems in biology, with which we are mainly concerned, led us to adopt a mathematical technique to render them tractable and relatively easy to solve. The phase field method, used when dealing with dynamical systems with moving boundary condition, addresses arising difficulties involved with tracking those boundaries. In this work we model the motion of neutrophils, cells of the immune system, in response to chemical driving. In this research the dynamics of a non-reactive and a reactive gas bubble under various pressure fields are studied. Comprehensive mathematical models have been developed to simulate the dynamic behavior of different gas bubbles. On the basis of these models several features of thermo-fluid mechanical behavior of gas bubbles are then discussed and their applications for the metals processing operations are described. MYC is a key oncogene abnormally expressed in over 50% of cancers, and this dysregulation is associated with poor therapeutic response and unfavorable patient outcomes. However, targeting MYC is highly challenging due to the absence of ligand-binding or catalytic domains, making it difficult to develop direct inhibitors. As a result, there is significant interest in alternative strategies to inhibit MYC’s oncogenic activity. MYSM1 is a chromatin-binding deubiquitinase (DUB) that promotes gene expression by catalyzing the removal of the H2AK119ub epigenetic mark from chromatin. The efficiency of electric powertrains is of great importance for the electrification of transport. Different powertrain topologies have various advantages and disadvantages. In this thesis, the efficiencies of two different powertrains are compared. Both designs use a 2 level inverter and a surface mounted Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM). In the first design, the inverter is directly powered by a high voltage battery and is operated using traditional Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM). This study is an attempt to analyze some of the social psychological underpinnings of the contemporary trends in postponement of marriage and possible increase in singlehood in the U. S. Recent census data, for 1970-78 specifically, and for 1960 to date generally, show marked increases in that direction among the young marriageables 18 to 34 years old. Receiving societies regard the migrant as a threat to the order and unity of national identity but the migrant is, in fact, also constitutive of that order and unity.
