- Quantity of volumes composing a book. It is a purely material distribution,
contrary to division in part (tome, in french). At the origin, a volume indicates a papyrus roll
on which was transcribed a book or one section of a book. In opposition to a part (tome)
which means division (division in parts (tomes) corresponds to as many titles).
A part (tome) can be divided into volumes, but not the opposite.
