This article examines the first stages of the constitution of a Quebec anti-sanitary measures network on Twitter between March 12, the date of the announcement by the Premier of Quebec of the first sanitary restrictions, and March 31, 2020. Based on a sociotechnical approach, it examines the assembly of anti-sanitary discourses and the role of the different actors, both human and technological, who contribute to shaping their contours and content. Through the analysis of the four stages that punctuate the elaboration of a network—problematization, interest, enrolment, and mobilization of allies—it demonstrates how a populism from below takes shape over the course of the exchanges, fuelled by conspiracy theories, which contribute to the crystallization of an opposition between the elites and the people. The stabilization of the identity of this network is thus not based on a substratum of shared facts, or on a common reading grid of the health crisis, but on a posture of denunciation of the political, economic, and scientific elites. It thus allows the convergence of the “anti-,” including the anti-vaccines, anti-environmentalists, and anti-pluralists, but above all the anti-elites and anti-systems, and participates very early in the crisis provoked by COVID‑19 in the enlargement of the network.

This article explores the impact of social media on extremism and conspiracism. In particular, the recent period has shown that the far right represents an increasingly concrete threat in the public sphere, as evidenced by the influence of movements such as QAnon or the Capitol assault of January 6, 2021. Using the results of a research project on media and extremism carried out in Quebec between 2017 and 2021, this article shows that the extreme right makes particular use of social media, and that these act certainly as echo chambers, but also as vectors of a complex and protean conspiracist ideology. Qualitative interviews with radicalized individuals illustrate the ideological integration of social media into the cultural and political strategy of today's extreme right.

There are more and more mixed couples throughout Canada (Statistique Canada, 2014) and elsewhere in the world (Cooney et Radina, 2000; Kalmijn, 2010; Shih et Sanchez, 2005); however, research on mixed couples and their offspring is still scarce, and even more so in Quebec (Le Gall, 2003; Unterreiner, 2017). These studies generally portray a negative picture, emphasizing identity problems, mental health issues, behavioral and educational problems (Udry, Richard, Rose et Hendrickson-Smith, 2003; Unterreiner, 2011). This article addresses the cultural identity of these young adults, most of them born in Quebec, from one Quebec born parent and one immigrant parent, and its influence on their psychological well-being and academic performance. When these young adults adopt the integration style (Berry, 1980), valuing thus both parental cultures, they function well and seem to be no different from young adults of (both) Quebec born parents. On the other hand, a weak identification in the immigrant parent's culture seems to impact negatively on their psychological well-being.

It is widely acknowledged that the COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated the adoption of distance education to the extent that it has now become an accepted mode of teaching at all academic levels. As a result, “comodal” or “flexible” courses, where some students attend in‑person while others participate remotely, may offer a new instructional avenue for institutions. This article provides a systematic review of the literature to identify what we know about comodal teaching in higher education.

Anchored in an instrumental epistemology and clinical didactics, this study analyzes the learning practices of two female students enrolled in a distance learning program within a Learning Management System (LMS) that integrates GENeSPRIT, a private workspace generator, allowing them to personalize the management of their personal learning environment (PLE). The results show that these two participants use various types of formal and/o*r informal resources in their learning practices without relying on GENeSPRIT. This finding highlights the importance of taking the learner's pre-existing digital skills into consideration when designing an LMS to better foster autonomy and engagement in the learning process.

High-level sports encourage athletes to develop multiple relationships to the body. Using a questionnaire (n = 1342) to survey individuals who have participated in any of forty disciplines about various aspects of their practices (training methods, diet, use of medication, relationship to pain, etc.), this article proposes a typology of bodily commitments that emerge in top-level sports. Distinguished by three dimensions derived from an MCA (self-preservation, instrumentality and competition) a classification analysis was used to identify six profiles. More or less similar to or distant from the ‘champion habitus,' these profiles are all compatible with a high-level career. A regression analysis shows that, while sports socialization characteristics —i.e., the type of discipline and the influence of the sport system—are the most predictive explanatory factors for athletes' physical commitment, the share they owe to previous or parallel socializations (e.g., family socialization, gender, class) is non-negligible but more diffuse.

Refugees, asylum seekers, and non-status migrants face precarious living conditions that prevent them from realizing their potential for integration into society. In order to reduce the factors of vulnerability that affect these migrant populations, public and community sector organizations are deploying coordination efforts through cross-sectoral initiatives. The implementation of these collaborations relies on what we call “front-line intermediaries” (i.e., front-line workers mainly employed or volunteering in the community sector). These intermediaries, who can be likened to Michael Lipsky's concept of street-level bureaucrats, work in close proximity to populations, providing holistic care (such as psychosocial support and food aid) that addresses the precarious living conditions of refugees, asylum seekers, and non-status migrants. Our article analyzes the central role of front-line workers through three major challenges identified by Lipsky, namely the challenges of discretion, accountability, and resources. The article concludes on an advocacy call addressed to the Quebec government to recognize the value of community-based initiatives, not only viewing community actors as “implementing agents,” but also as partners in the design of programs and policies for access to services.

La survivance, the only francophone weekly published in Alberta since 1928, ceased publication on November 7 1967 to give way to Le Franco-Albertain (LFA). The change to the title and, in part, the managing team was also accompanied by a relatively radical change to the new journal's “policy” to become less conservative and more participative. To show these changes, this article will concentrate on the publication's hand-drawn images (in particular the comics). The corpus covers a little over 10 years, from mid-November 1967 to February 1979. From thousands of pages, 1,500 images were collected. Prior to analysing this corpus, however, the article concentrates on the 1960s which favoured and explain these changes. This general context includes the liberalisation of norms and of consumption, the competition from other forms of media – radio and television – that influenced advertising revenues and, in particular for the Catholics who still constituted the majority of Franco-Albertans, secularisation and the impact of Vatican II. All of these developments encouraged management to attempt to gain the participation of readers by the use of headlines, comics (e.g. whodunnits) as well as interactive images (games) albeit to limited success.

May 2021: in Kamloops, British Columbia, the media announce that the remains of 215 children have been found by ground-penetrating radar on the site of a former cemetery next to what was once an Indian residential school. This event triggers an outcry among the Canadian public that is echoed internationally. For several weeks, indignation runs high, with the public demanding explanations, especially as other similar discoveries follow. This article analyzes the issues behind these events, as well as the debates sparked by the fact that no human remains have been exhumed and displayed. What do we know about these children and their death? Under what conditions did they die? Did they really die because of the residential schools and their associated policies? Were their deaths “normal” or “abnormal”? Did they have funerals? We will see that these imperceptible graves have challenged the narrative of Canadian history.
