Many Indigenous communities place issues of identity at the heart of their concerns, having seen their rich cultural heritage threatened by a variety of assimilationist processes. Members of the Atikamekw Nation, and a team of non-indigenous designers from the Université de Montréal have been working together to imagine new ways of facilitating cultural transmission, all the while supporting local, community-based development efforts. This paper presents Tapiskwan, an intergenerational participatory action research project, and discusses the issues, challenges, and opportunities this collaboration has revealed and seeks to address. Territorial transformations have greatly limited community members' access to the raw materials that are central to their material culture. In response to this problem, new ways to highlight participants' visual heritage through the development of artisanal textile and paper products are proposed. In relation to the Indigenous ways of life that are harmonized according to the seasonal activities related to subsistence for each period of the year, a more seasonal approach to the activities of production is proposed, due to several intensive periods per year.

This study sheds new light on online citizen participation by explicitly showing the rules that guide government practices in this area. These comprise, mainly, a priority for neutrality and methodological rigour, the preservation of the meaning and the uniqueness of the message, the credibility of the mechanism and the quality of the content. Due to these rules, which are well entrenched in the governance of Quebec, public agencies tend to privilege a hierarchical management of citizen participation mechanisms and to therefore exercise caution with regard to social media, especially online forums. The study also shows that the Internet contributes to the consolidation of the traditional tools of public consultation in Quebec. Finally, the authors propose several ways to better exploit the deliberative and collaborative potential of new interactive platforms for citizen participation.

In this paper, we will explore the phenomenon of attention capture and its commodification, using virtual personal assistants as an example. The latter will be presented as the concrete personification of the abstract mechanisms of capitalist domination. They will then appear as an example of a perverse practice of “taking care,” that of a diversion of care for predatory purposes. To support this statement, we will use the notions of “dirty care” and “phenomenology of the prey” developed by Elsa Dorlin in Se défendre, une philosophie de la violence, as well as the analysis of digital capitalism as predatory capitalism deployed in Techno-féodalisme, critique de l'économie numérique by Cédric Durand. To fully understand the context in which these virtual personal assistants are deployed, we will mobilize the concept of “algorithmic mediation” in the era of big data upstream by identifying four of its methods of intervention in reality; modalities that are fully in line with the logic of surveillance capitalism. At the end of our analysis, we will state that this surveillance capitalism—as it presents itself through virtual personal assistants—has all the appearances of a “predatory” digital capitalism whose capture (or even appropriation) of attention is facilitated by the protective and attentive face through which it manifests itself.

The online adult entertainment industry, as Darling (2014) showed, is a new case of low intellectual property regime, i.e. largely inefficient in preventing the massive copying of content. In this paper, we focus on alternative pornography and explore the mechanisms which contribute to the creation of pornographic content. We argue that user communities help content providers to absorb sunk costs associated with content production and distribution. Our main conclusion is that, although user communities cannot solve alone the incentive failure in online pornography, they complement and reinforce strategies which enable content producers to earn revenues from vulnerable copyrighted works.

How do we know what we know about youth citizenship ? This epistemological question has been neglected in the field of youth citizenship and public discourses on youth political apathy. This article draws on the theoretical perspective of social justice studies to unmask the relations of power based on age that have shaped current knowledge about youth citizenship. The analysis draws attention to the epistemic injustices and methodological flaws in the specific field of civic literacy in Canada. It is argued that a difference-centered approach to youth citizenship could help foster a better understanding of youth experiences of civic engagement and political participation. Yet, this potentiel can only be achieved through a self-reflexive inquiry that critically investigates the research process itself in current research trends. Although a dominant approach in the study of civic literacy is limited in its capacity to produce knowledge that is socially just towards adolescents, te concept could be reinvigorated through a critical empirically-grounded examination of youth civic competencies that are evidenced in some of their engagments with new media technologies. Yet, to fulfill this goal also requires that scholars engage in crucial debates about their chosen epistemology and theory of democracy.

In this paper, I analyze self‑published children's books by Black French and Black German authors as a form of Blacktivism. I study how the authors' comments about their work echoes with an activist narrative, and how they participate in a fight for racial justice, not only through the message of their children's books, but through their choice of self‑publishing. First, I examine their motivations for writing and relate them to what I call “kidliteractivism,” to then show how self‑publishing can be a form of literary and racial insubordination, and finally I shed light on how self‑published children's books by French and German authors of African descent are linked to broader Blacktivist movements in France and Germany.

Following Pierre Moeglin's work (2006, 2016) on the industrialization of education, this paper is set in the context of the growing diffusion of a conception of digital education promoted by the French educational technology (EdTech) sector. We present the socio-economic context in which EdTech companies operate, and then introduce elements of reflection on the concept of “educational platform” in relation to existing works. The methodology, inspired by French social semiotics (Saemmer et al., 2022), mobilizes critical concepts from the semiotics of screen writing, coupled with research training with teachers, to whom we proposed to question the design choices of educational artifacts during a training course. Using the Lalilo platform as an object of study, we show how an introduction to social semiotics can lead teachers to reflect not only on the values, norms, and representations of the world modeled in the design of educational platforms, but also on their own representations of digital education.

The internet and media resources have opened new opportunities for digital cultural diplomacy and management of culture. Theoretically an ideal choice for cultural diplomacy, Constantin Brancusi’s reputation as a representative for government agency has suffered a crisis of reception. A Romanian-born and French-adopted sculptor, Brancusi has become a symbol of folklore and mythology but also a great, internationally recognized sculptor. This has been due to the existence of preferred or fixed models of desigining projects instead of involving teams of different backgrounds and incorporating cultural concepts in the political discourse. Approaching the topic with concepts of cultural diplomacy, media anthropology, heritage and online discourse, this case study deals with media events of cultural diplomacy broadcasted online in present day Romania. It emphasizes the potential that lies in cultural management and the important role of team spirit in designing public cultural policies and implementing projects.

This paper discusses the relation between cultural mapping and participatory community cultural mapping, proposing the integration of a mobile device application (app) in the cultural mapping process of the Arteria project. This application aims to expand the notion of cultural appropriation by exploring how citizens can make crucial contributions to the cultural mapping process. This technology will evolve from and improve Arteria’s digital platform/website by boosting the processes of collection and registration of tangible and intangible cultural assets and the dissemination of registered cultural assets. The app will also enhance the connection among socio-cultural actors and improve the quality of community involvement in the cultural, social, and political dynamics of this cultural mapping project. To justify the need for such a tool, an overview of the project’s intent, objectives, and activities is presented, as well as its philosophy of intervention in local communities.
