Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is debilitating mental disorder that affects approximately 2 percent of individuals in community samples. Despite advances in psychiatry, a lack of clear guidance for diagnosis and treatment hinders the pursuit of appropriate treatments and a comprehensive understanding of this mental disorder. Transcranial direct current stimulation is a novel therapeutic tool that has shown positive outcome amongst different psychiatric illnesses. Concerning BPD, with the complexity of diagnosis and the lack of targeted-symptom treatments, data is limited and scarce. Although the available data is limited, with only five published articles, these studies have demonstrated positive outcomes in patients with BPD. However, discrepancies among trials have impeded further comparisons and clear recommendations. Therefore, the research team at Montreal Mental Health University Institute (IUSMM) launched …

Sexual abuse during childhood can be traumatic for children and their families. The criminal aspect of this form of victimization requires specialized evaluations, interventions, and, often, immediate measures to ensure the child's protection. In some cases, these lead to legal procedures. Although our knowledge regarding the consequences of child sexual abuse and effective therapeutic interventions continues to increase, we know little of the impact of legal procedures on these children's rehabilitation. This study examines the various judiciary trajectories followed by sexually abused children and their influence on the mental health of children receiving therapeutic services in a Child Advocacy Center (CAC). Results show that about a third of the children (28 %) were involved in legal actions, sometimes including a court appearance, usually before therapy began. Our findings indicate that in some circumstances legal activities had beneficial effects on the children's mental health. We observed greater therapeutic gains in children who testified in court and in children for whom legal procedures were undertaken than in children for whom no legal actions were taken. These initial findings underline the need for better documentation of the judicial component of such children's experience and can help identify conditions that facilitate recovery in sexually abused children.

This article aims to examine, firstly, the major orientations of the therapeutic approach to suicide that has developed in Québec over the past thirty years, and then to carry out a summary analysis of the two systemic approaches to suicide that succeeded one another during the twentieth century. At a considerable distance from the concept of “mental illness”, the authors wish to show that the Québec “exception” in the area of suicide was related to the conjunction of two large-scale social transformations that have marked Québec over the past half-century. The first of these generally affects wage-based societies, and the second is specific to the changes in French Canada that gave rise to Québec society. According to the authors' interpretation, these two historical processes affect the regulation of gender identity through the institution of the family, and Québec's redefinition of the collective reference in this field has gone in the same direction as the new forms of integration into collective life that accompany the system of employment and the welfare state, a resonance that has accentuated the existential scope of both of these transformations.

ABSTRACTThe author proposes a synthesis of the essential elements to distinguish Case Management from Assertive Community Treatment with people suffering from severe mental illness. By situating these two approaches in their social context, the author identifies points of reference that allow to distinguish them one from the other on both practical and conceptual levels. This exercise allows to dissipate the widespread confusion in the literature as well as give clinical workers the necessary tools to identify the appropriate models to meet the needs of the clientele. This also implies taking into consideration the characteristics of the system in which they intervene for its configuration exerts a considerable influence on their work.
