The novel Amandes et melon by Madeleine Monette plays on the intimate connection that is woven between absence and desire by examining an artist, Elvire, who uses his painting to understand the absence of a loved one. The novel explores the ways that narration and visual image can evoke absence, as well as the multiple ways that absence and desire are developed in and through artistic creation. Furthermore, it's often through the style of still-life that the novel shows its conception of the connections which exist between art, absence and desire. This analysis examines these phenomena in order to determine the similarities and dissimilarities between the literary practices of the author and the artistic practices of the character whom she depicts.

Though published more than thirty years apart, the novels Le Métier à tisser by Mohammed Dib and Les Vigiles by Tahar Djaout are both constructed around the figure of the loom, the instrument of labour of a people apparently faced with endless dispossession. If, in Dib’s novel, hope persists that the people will take a stand so that “things change” (164), in Djaout’s novel disillusionment takes on dramatic accents. "Renovating" the loom or the country, in fact only serves the interests of the Vigils who do their utmost to “defend the country against its own people” (1991 : 111). The great united family of the new state dictates everyone’s behaviour, their life and their death, if the latter can serve its purposes. From the joint reading of these two novels emerges a warning against the fantasy of “in spite of it all” used by the authorities to manipulate its people.

“Avant-garde times. Maybe the only exciting form of life, because of its intimate connection with writing”: this is how Chloé Delaume, in Où le sang nous appelle (2014), remembers her initial enthusiasm for some experiences of poetic and politic activism, even though she later took stock of them in a severely critical way. This quotation epitomizes Chloé Delaume’s ambivalent relationship with the avant-gardist tradition, especially with the situationist legacy. In the light of Delaume’s works, from Le Cri du sablier to Les Sorcières de la République, this paper will try to show how the avant-garde concept with its historical, sociological and pragmatic aspects, however obsolete it may seem, allows to overcome this contradiction and to better position Chloé Delaume in the contemporary literary field.

The economic crisis, the threats on the environment, the violation of human rights, the North/South disparities are at the origin of the development, since a few years, in non-profit organisations mainly, of sociocultural community developers’ specializations in «education to the environment», «intercultural education», «education in human rights», «education in the development of international solidarity». These approaches advocate quite a shape of social transformation towards a more just, more egalitarian, more environmental-friendly world in respect to human being. This communication tries to determine why and how, in theory, sociocultural community development could invest this field of intervention.

SummaryBalzac's insight into the web of fictions and fantasies that upheld modern social conditions provided Marx with an implicit framework within which he attempted to analyse the systematic production of illusions on which such relations depend. Between the texts of Balzac and Marx, between the dramatic scripts of the former and the historical analyses of the latter, there is more than just a mirror image or analogical relation: they are two faces of a realism that seeks, according to diverging normative judgments, to grasp the potential alternatives embedded in the actual capitalist développement.

This work aims to present negrism in three novels by Antonio Olinto: A casa de agua, O rei de Keto and Trono de vidro. Brazilian negrism has two faces : it can be considered from a thematic perspective, or as a set of procedures. In this article, negrism will be seen from this latter angle and used to analyse the representation of the world of the people of African descent in those three novels. Olinto values black people and represents them in all their diversity, thus breaking away from the stereotypes in force at the time.
