Middlegrounds allow essential interactions between the innovation needs of upperground institutions and the creative productions of underground actors. We explore the hypothesis that these entities are at the heart of a broader institutional creation dynamic. We articulate, on four case studies, the concepts of middleground (Simon, 2009), intermediary institution (Sainsaulieu, 2001), idea of work and person-institution (Hauriou, 1925) and conflict (Simmel, 1908). The case studies reveal sophisticated articulations between middlegrounds, uppergrounds and undergrounds and show that “working n middleground mode” could constitute one of the necessary betweennesses in the current transformations of our societies.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the creation of psychoeducation as a university discipline, the developmental trajectory of psychoeducational intervention is traced on the basis of the events related to the evolution of its purpose (reeducation, readaptation and adaptation) and their repercussions on the diversification of its professional fields of activity. The transition from traditional practice (vocational call and power of action) to contemporary practice (professional discipline and power of knowledge) is characterized in terms of the evolution and the preponderance of clinical accompaniment, the exercise of an advisory role and the psychoeducational assessment. Research data and testimonials will support the statements made and the nature of the challenges psychoeducators face in their area of work. Given the variations in the conditions under which psychoeducation is practiced, the conclusion raises questions about the future of psychoeducational intervention.

In 1995, the teaching profession in the French Community of Belgium underwent considerable restructuring in the context of severe budgetary restrictions. All aspects of its operation were affected by this reform: the organization of training, financing and the status of personnel members. The article primarily aims at describing the different aspects of the reform, with an emphasis on new elements and changes that it brought about. There is then an analysis of the main lines of the reform at the dawn of the new public management (NPM) and a focus on the actors’ logic applied in the Hautes Écoles. In conclusion, the author explores the nature of the modifications and the new practices that they generate. According to the author, this is the passage from a method of operation, often catalogued as bureaucratic, to actors’ logic, where the people and authorities should be able to express and negotiate their different points of view; where the exercise of power should become more consensual; where the spaces of freedom and autonomy should be managed on the basis of a pedagogical, social and cultural project. In this context of renewal, a culture of evaluation related to the requirements of quality is imperative.

With his classic 1968 article, Benjamin Bloom popularized the approach of the pedagogy of mastering learning. Although educators accept the principles of this educative approach, it is evaluated less favourably for its so-called behavioural origins and this approach is often associated exclusively with objective-based teaching. In this article, the authors wish to demonstrate that certain basic elements of the Pedagogy of Mastery are taking on a new relevance, even an increased role, in the context of the Pedagogy of Actualization, an educative approach in which the ultimate goal is the actualization of students’ full learning potential.

It is important to pay particular attention to children’s behaviour problems because of the adaptation difficulties these children may face over the medium and long term. If children have these problems at an early age, they may be at risk of adaptation problems, such as dropping out of school, drug addiction, being rejected by other young people, interpersonal problems, and delinquent behaviour. Early intervention is important in counteracting this problematic development trajectory. Intervention with children who have behaviour problems is a major challenge for day-care personnel. This article is based on an intervention program offered to day-care personnel to help them deal with these types of situations. The data, gathered during a qualitative process, reveals that participants find that the program has positive effects. By doing a better analysis of the needs that children express through these behaviours, they are able to choose better adapted and more effective intervention strategies. However, they emphasize that effective intervention with a child in difficulty requires the concerted action of everyone working with the child, thus the importance of working with the parents during the intervention process.

Technological, economic and social changes are leading to a “labour crisis”. And yet, any crisis calls for managerial responses not only at the macro level, but also at the micro level of productive organizations. This raises the question of the way in which managerial teams seize work, identify the associated issues and imagine the actions necessary to respond to these contemporary challenges. A survey of 33 corporate senior executives shows that work, which they put at a distance, is largely delegated to local management. Senior executives limit their concerns to managing only those employees on whom their conception of strategic advantage is based.
