This article, which analyzes two popular Malian novels, attempts to answer three essential questions concerning the interest of the popular novel, the specific subjects it deals with, and its boundaries with the canonical novel. It shows that the Malian popular novel meets the same aesthetic criteria as other novels in this category found elsewhere. Amour Haram by Aramata Diawara and L’Union interdite by Ouleï Ba mark a significant evolution in the Malian sentimental novel, in that they propose a poetics in which the boundaries between the so-called literary novel and the so-called popular novel become sometimes difficult to draw. These novels not only portray the political crisis that Mali has been experiencing for several years but also describe a major social problem: taboos and their transgression.
