In February 1941, Gabrielle Roy had not yet launched her career as a novelist. A reporter at the time, Roy published an article in Le Bulletin des agriculteurs entitled “Mort d’extrême vieillesse.“ In it, the future author proposed a journalistic reading of a then contemporary social phenomenon. At the beginning of the 1940s, seigneurial property was still not a thing of the past in the province of Québec. Roy’s report was intended to be both historical and didactic and was based upon the testimony of certain “vieux habitants.“ The author adopted a critical stance with regard to a “venerable“ institution which contemporary historians still praised. She recalled that, close to a century after the abolition of the seigneurial regime (1854), “we are still experiencing the final effects of the colonial regime what he [Richelieu] imposed upon us more than 300 years ago.“ It was not until the 1970s, at a time when the issue of the seigneurial system was still to be resolved, that historians adopted a similar position. The present article will reveal a perceptive observer of an event that had not received significant attention but which was nonetheless crucial to the history of modern Québec: the final extinction of the system of relations “seigneur/tenant.“

In her novel La belle ordure (2010), Simone Chaput presents the reader with an oxymoron even before a reading of the narrative has begun, as the title itself is oxymoronic and intertextual. As usual, in this novel it is the captivating precision of Chaput’s style that especially impresses, a style which rests in the use of simple devices, among them the echoes created by apparently irreconcilable binary tensions and the almost obsessive repetition of these same images. In this exploration of the difficult relation to the real, the reader oscillates dangerously between, on the one hand, a poetic mystification which is at once gratuitous and aesthetic and, on the other hand, a cold lucidity which is both implacable and cynical. How to account for happiness? How can horror—at either the personal or planetary level—so closely co-exist with the fullness of love, with compassion, beauty, generosity and the giving of self? In a novel in which every word achieves meaning only in the presence of its opposite—love and war, innocence and knowledge, predator and prey, cruelty and gentleness, the ephemeral and the lasting, the mythic and the real—only a form of oxymoronic intelligibility seems to offer a means by which such contemporary issues may achieve paradoxical negotiation.

Self-recognition and the impact of family relations are often connected with the theme of identity in the critical discourse on the francophone dramaturgy of Western Canada. Nonetheless, discussion of these concepts has rarely served as the object of focussed analysis. The present article seeks to address this lacuna through an examination of Roger Auger’s Suite manitobaine. It will show how two important semiotic functions (the hierarchisation and the integration of dramatic works) constitute a key component of this analysis from the perspective of the literary culture of the spectator. The description of a collection of memorial traces and of symbolic mediations (franglais, social realism and reference to a specific family model) contribute to an explication of the first function. An analysis of the family conflict at the heart of Je m’en vais à Régina casts light upon the second.

At present, the conduct of French language education within minority francophone communities may already claim important institutional assets, though there remains much to be done, in part because the relevant pupils and, still more largely, the Francophonie itself have been effected by important changes. Given this situation, it is important to consider pedagogy within its context in order that it achieve its maximum effect and remain attentive to the “voices of the pupils.“ It is also necessary to consider pedagogy in conjunction with the construction of an identity which is at the heart of French language schooling: thus, as pupils engage in communicative projects that valorise the language as a social practice that emphasises dynamics of production, they become actors and creators who express values, engage in forms of behaviour and take action. In learning situations involving reading and writing in science in which they develop a sense of critical civic responsibility with regard to social issues, the pupils learn to “engage the world“ in French. Thus a pedagogy based on the oral and which considers articulation in the context of identity formation leads the pupils to engage their voices in the shaping of a voice. Such an approach is not without considerable import, in particular because it attempts to foster within the pupils the power of self-realisation as a learner, as an individual and as an autonomous, self-reflexive subject and because it positions French as a means to this emancipation. In the name of a rationale which is likewise a necessity: To what extent can a pedagogy of French language education enacted within francophone minority communities contribute to the understanding the pupils have of their francophone identity?
