Cet article examine les relations entre mythe et histoire à partir d’un cas particulier. La première partie de l’article est une analyse formelle qui tente de comparer un mythe d’origine recueilli chez les Dìì avec les mythes de même nature que racontent les voisins. On y distingue des inversions et des variations qui, de ce point de vue formel, font penser à des démarquages qui visent simplement à la différenciation et qui placent les mythes dìì dans un ensemble supra-ethnique. Cependant, une étude subséquente et la collecte d’autres mythes dìì traitant du même sujet, mais sur un plan plus local, montrent que le premier mythe analysé est une transformation récente des mythes recueillis plus tard pour en faire un projet politique. Les transformations formelles modernes réduisent les mythes traditionnels à un seul en les inversant ce qui, loin de refléter une structure politique et sociale ancienne, en produit une autre, censée être tout aussi mythique, pour mieux justifier les changements politiques que s’appliquent à réaliser les disséminateurs du mythe.

This article examines the relations between myth and history from a particular exemple. The first part of the article is a formal analysis which attempts to compare an origin myth collected among the Dìì to those of the same nature which are available from the neighboring populations. There are inversions and variations which, from this formai point of view, seem only to aim at a différentiation from the neighbors. However, subsequent research and additional dìì myths dealing with the same subject, albeit situated on a more local and restricted focus, show that the first collected myth is a modem transformation of the myths collected later on to justify a very precise political purpose. The modem formai transformations reduce the traditional myths to a single one by inverting them. This operation, far from reflecting a ancient socio-political structure, produces a new one, said to be as mythical as the first ones, to better justify the political changes that the tellers of the myth are trying to put under way.

This essay considere the sport of curling as practiced in Canada. At a general level, I propose that the cultural understandings which have grown around the sport are important for an assessment of its social importance. In particular, I intend to examine some of the conflicting meanings which participants have created through their involvement in the sport. I will point to the ways in which the sport is implicated in the construction and renegotiation of basic value orientations, and the ways in which curlere, especially competitive ones, test social boundaries through sophisticated forms of cheating.

Cet article se penche sur le « curling », sport pratiqué au Canada. À un niveau général, je constate que les compréhensions culturelles autour de ce sport sont importantes pour une évaluation de son impact social. Plus particulièrement, j’examinerai les représentations conflictuelles crées par les participants à travers leur implication dans ce sport. Entre autre, je discuterai des façons par lesquelles ce sport s’insère dans la construction et la renégociation des valeurs. De plus, les manières par lesquelles les participants, surtout les participants compétitifs, défient les frontières sociales par des formes sophistiquées de tricherie.

The village cemeteries of the Berber-speaking inhabitants of the High Atlas mountains of Morocco are overgrown with untended masses of végétation which are allowed to disturb, and indeed, eventually, to obliterate, the graves. The resulting landscapes are not, however, simply areas “abandoned to nature” because, in a heavily overgrazed environment like the High-Atlas, such an overgrowth of vegetation requires the systematic exclusion of goats and sheep and the prohibition of wood-gathering, and hence is the resuit of human choice and deliberated action. In other words, what appears to be a “naturel” landscape is in fact an artifice, a “made” landscape, and, as such, is capable of being deciphered. The paper explores various dimensions of this “symbolic landscape” by situating it within the everyday habits and practices of village life.

Les cimetières des villages des berbérphones du Haut-Atlas du Maroc ne sont pas entretenus et consistent des masses de végétation luxuriante, même chaotique, qui est permise à pousser au point où elle désajuste et, finalement, où elle efface les tombes. Mais les paysages qui résultent de cette pratique ne représentent pas nécessairement des terrains « abandonnées à la nature », parce que, dans une environnement déjà fortement dénaturée par la pâturage des moutons et des chèvres, une telle luxuriance de végétation ne pourrait pas se produire que par l’exercise délibérée du choix humain. C’est à dire, malgré son apparence « naturelle », la cimetière berbère est vraiment une artifice, le produit de la volonté humaine, et par conséquent, capable d’être déchiffré. Dans cet essai, l’auteur explore certains dimensions de ce « paysage symbolique » par le moyen de le situer analytiquement dans la pratique de la vie quotidienne villagoise.

The actions and voices of the people of Lynx Lake tell a story of choosing to define themselves as Christians, and declare a long-standing, community-wide commitment to maintain a strong, unified Anglican profile. This study outlines the role of the church in Lynx Lake within its historical context, presents and analyses representative samples of Native-to-Native religious discourse including a sermon and several testimonials, and addresses changing religious views of younger members of the Severn community. Central to the study is a discussion of the use of a discourse-centered approach to ethnographic research.

Au coeur de la pensée postmoderne se trouve une critique fondamentale du savoir scientifique et de ses prétentions à incarner la vérité universelle. Ces prétentions entraînent la disqualification des discours non légitimés par la science et des interprétations que les acteurs sociaux font de la réalité. Les chercheurs postmodernes comme Michel Foucault s’opposent vigoureusement à ces effets de pouvoir propres à tout « discours vrai », qui entraînent de plus des conséquences imprévisibles dans divers contextes de pratiques sociales. Selon l’argumentation de cet article, une catégorie de discours féministe en sciences sociales produit lui-même de tels effets de pouvoir lorsqu’il représente « les femmes » comme universellement opprimées, notamment dans le cas des femmes du Tiers-Monde et du développement international. Afin de réagir contre ces effets, il est nécessaire de faire appel à une autre conception de la solidarité et de réorienter pragmatiquement la production de connaissances vers un régime de vérité différent, plus satisfaisant.

Postmodern thinking is characterized by a fondamental critic of scientific knowledge and of its pretensions to embody universal thruth. Indeed, these pretensions provoke the disqualification of discourses which are not legitimated by science, notably those which are the products of the many interpretations of lay social actors. Postmodern thinkers like Michel Foucault take a vigourous stand against the power effects inherent to any “true discourse” which have moreover impredictable consequences on various fields of social practices. This paper argues that a certain type of feminist discourse in social sciences produces such effects when it represents “women” as being universally oppressed, particularly in the case of Third World women and international development. In order to react against those power effects, a different conception of solidarity must be used and the production of knowledge must be reoriented pragmatically towards an other, more satisfaying, regime of truth.
