À l'embouchure du Saguenay, près de la tête du chenal Laurentien, le Quaternaire est représenté par un ensemble original d'unités morpho-sédimentaires dont le delta perché (120-125 m) de Tadoussac, le remblaiement fluvio-marin de la vallée de la rivière du Moulin à Baude, la terrasse marine de 60 m à la pointe aux Vaches, la terrasse composite à la pointe aux Alouettes, les grandes terrasses à rythmites limono-argileuses des pointes Hubert et au Bouleau, la vaste batture de la pointe aux Alouettes et trois crêtes en arc de cercle submergées. D'après les dates au ¹⁴C et l'aminochronologie sur fragments de coquillages dans un dépôt sableux à la pointe aux Alouettes, d'un âge égal ou supérieur à 35 ka, la région fut déglacée au cours d'un interstade du Wisconsinien. Cet événement marin fut suivi d'une phase de sédimentation sableuse à rudites, d'une phase de marge glaciaire flottante, puis d'un ou de plusieurs épisodes glaciaires. À la fin du Wisconsinien, la déglaciation partielle de la région et l'invasion précoce de la Mer de Goldthwait commencent avant 11,1 ka. Des bancs diamictiques intercalés dans les argiles marines et un till observé au sud de l'embouchure du Saguenay, l'épandage fluvioglaciaire à 120-125 m d'altitude, à Tadoussac, mis en place entre 11 et 10,6 ka, et au moins l'une des crêtes morainiques submergées sont attribuées à l'épisode de Saint-Narcisse. La Mer de Goldthwait a ensuite, au moins dès 10,4 ka, envahi les dépressions libres de glace jusqu'à une altitude maximale relative de 140-150 m, tandis qu'une langue de glace subsistait dans le fjord et que la marge de l'Inlandsis laurentidien sur les hautes terres du Bouclier reculait par amincissement. Le relèvement isostatique a été rapide, le niveau de 20 m étant atteint vers 8 ka. Vers 6 ka le niveau marin relatif était voisin du niveau actuel. Il est remonté ensuite construisant, à 6 m d'altitude, la terrasse Mitis, datée entre 1,2 et 1,6 ka.

The outlet of the Saguenay fiord, near the head of the Laurentian Channel, is characterised by a sequence of original morpho-sedimentary units including a raised (120-125 m) delta at Tadoussac, a thick fluvio-marine valleyfill in Rivière du Moulin à Baude, a 60-m high marine terrace at Pointe aux Vaches, a complex terrace at Pointe aux Alouettes, wide silty-clayey (rhythmites) terraces at Pointe Hubert and Pointe au Bouleau, a large tidal flat at Pointe aux Alouettes, and three submerged half-moon shaped ridges. According to ¹⁴C dates and aminochronology on shell fragments from a relict sand deposit at Pointe aux Alouettes, 35 ka or older, the area was ice-free during a Wisconsinan interstadial. This marine event was followed by a period of sand and gravel deposition, a period of marginal ice shelf deposition, and by one or several glacial episodes. During Late Wisconsinan, partial deglaciation and marine submergence occurred before 11.1 ka. Diamicts interstratified with marine clay and a till deposit occurring to the S of the fjord outlet, the outwash raised delta at Tadoussac built between 11 and 10.6 ka are correlated with the St. Narcisse event. Subsequently, the Goldthwait Sea at least by 10.4 ka submerged the ice-free topographic depressions of the Laurentidian Shield to a relative level 140-150 m. Then the Laurentide Ice Sheet retreated to the NW progressively thinning on the highlands while an ice tongue remained in the fjord. This isostatic recovery has been rapid, the 20-m level being emerged by 8 ka. Around 6 ka, the relative sea-level was approximately that of today. It rose subsequently, building the 6-m Mitis terrace dated between 1.2 and 1.6 ka.

Aus den ,4C-Daten und der Aminochronologie auf Muschelfragmenten in einer sandigen Ablagerung von Pointe aux Alouettes gleichen Alters Oder alter als 35 ka geht hervor, daf3 das Gebiet im Laufe eines Interstadials des Wiscon-siniums enteist wurde. Auf dieses marine Ereignis folgte eine Phase der Sand- und Kieselablagerung, eine Phase der Ablagerung von Schelfeis und einer oder mehrerer glazialer Episoden. Am Ende des Wiscon-siniums begann die teilweise Enteisung des Gebiets und die frùhe Invasion der Goldwaith-See vor 11,1 ka. Der Episode von Saint-Narcisse werden zwischen den Meereslehm geschobene diamiktische Bànke und ein sùdlich der Mùndung des Saguenay beobachtetes Till zugeordnet, sowie die fluvio-glaziale Aufschwemmung in 120-125 m Hôhe zwischen 11 und 10,6 ka bei Tadoussac, und mindestens eine der untergetauchten morânenartigen Schwellen. Die Goldwaith-See hat danach mindestens seit 10,4 ka die eisfreien Niederungen bis zu einer relativen maximalen Hôhe von 140-15Om ùberschwemmt, wàhrend eine Eiszunge im Fjord weiterbest-and und der Rand des laurentischen Inlandeises auf den Hochebenen des Schilds durch Ausdùnnung zurûckwich. Die isostatische Anhebung geschah schnell, das Niveau von 20 m Hôhe wurde gegen 8 ka erreicht. Um 6 ka war das relative Meeresniveau dem heutigen àhnlich. Es ist danach angestiegen und hat in 6 m Hôhe die Terrasse von Mitis angelegt, die auf zwischen 1,2 und 1,6 ka datiert wird.

Foraminiferal and sedimentological analysis of an underwater stratigraphie section from an Amerindian habitation site at Montague Harbour, British Columbia has further documented late Holocene sea level changes. It appears that part of the documented transgression was caused by tectonic subsidence of the area (Event 1 at approx. 3500 calendar years BP and Event 2 sometime before 1100 calendar years BP) and was recognized in the stratigraphie record by rapid environmental changes. The environmental changes caused by rapid shifts in water depth were recognized through sedimentological and foraminiferal evidence. The tectonic subsidence events, coupled with gentle late Holocene transgression, caused the breaching of Montague Harbour's northwestern channel. The breaching of the channel improved water circulation and increased salinity within the harbour. The salinity changes are reflected in the shift from a low salinity Cribroelphidium excavatum (Terquem, 1876) phenotype "clavata" dominated biofacies (1) at the base of the section to a higher salinity Buccella tenerrima (Bandy, 1950) and Elphidiella hannai (Cushman and Grant, 1927) dominated biofacies (2) at the top. These sea-level changes would have eventually forced local Amerindian settlements inland. The ¹⁴C dating of wood and shell, indicates that the recovery of archaeological remains of the Charles culture (ca.6500-3200 years BP) requires investigation in deeper waters.

L'analyse des foraminifères et des sédiments d'une coupe stratigraphique sous-marine d'un habitat amérindien a permis d'accroître les connaissances sur les changements du niveau marin. Il semble qu'une partie de la transgression connue ait été causée par une subsidence de nature tectonique (1^er épisode vers 3500 cal. BP et 2^e épisode un peu avant 1100 cal. BP) qui a entraîné des changements environnementaux rapides consignés dans la stratigraphie. Les sédiments et les foraminifères ont en effet enregistré les changements rapides de la profondeur de l'eau. Les épisodes de subsidence, accompagnés par une transgression modérée à l'Holocène supérieur, ont provoqué la formation d'une brèche dans le chenal nord-ouest du Montague Harbour, qui a facilité la circulation des eaux et fait augmenter la salinité à l'intérieur du havre. Ce changement de salinité s'est manifesté par le remplacement du biofaciès (1) de faible salinité dominé par Cribroelphidium excavatum (Terquem, 1876) type « clavata », à la base de la coupe, par le biofaciès (2) de forte salinité dominé par Bucella tenerrima (Bandy, 1950) et Elphidiella hannai (Cushman et Grant, 1927) au sommet. Les changements du niveau marin ont forcé les Amérindiens à déménager vers l'intérieur. La datation au ¹⁴C sur bois et coquille montre que la récupération de vestiges archéologiques de la culture Charles (ca 6500-3200 BP) devra se faire en eaux plus profondes.

Die Foraminiferen- und Sediment-Analyse eines stratigraphischen Unterwasserabschnitts von einer Indianer-Siedlung am Montague Harbour, British Columbia, hat weitere Belege ùber Meeresniveauwechsel im spàten Holozàn geliefert. Es scheint, daB ein Teil der dokumentierten Transgression durch tekton-ische Senkung des Gebiets verursacht wurde (Ereignis 1 urn circa 3500 Kalenderjahre v.u.Z. und Ereignis 2 irgendwann vor 1100 Kalenderjahren v.u.Z.) und in dem stratigraphischen Beleg durch rasche Umweltverànderungen kenntlich wurde. Die durch schnelle Wechsel der Wassertiefe verursachten Umweltverànderungen sind durch Sediment- und Foraminiferen-Belege aufgezeichnet worden. Die Episoden tektonischer Senkung verursachten zusammen mit einer sanften Transgression im spàten Holozàn die Bildung einer Bresche im nordwestlichen Kanal von Montague Harbour. Die Bresche im Kanal verbesserte die Wasserzirkulation und erhôhte den SaIzgehalt im Hafen. Die Verànderungen im Salzgehalt spiegeln sich im Wechsel von einer Biofazies (1) mit einem niedrigen Salzgehalt beherrscht von Cribroelphidium excavatum (Terquem, 1876) des Phânotypus "clavata" an der Basis des Schnittes, zu einer Biofazies (2) mit hôherem Salzgehalt, beherrscht von Bucella tenerrima (Bandy, 1950) und Elphidiella hannai (Cushman und Grant, 1927) an der Spitze. Diese Meeresniveau-Wechsel haben wohl die ôrtlichen indianischen Siedlungen gezwungen, landeinwàrts zu Ziehen. Die '4C-Datierung von HoIz und Muscheln zeigt, daB das Auffinden von archàologischen Spuren der Charles-Kultur (ca. 6500-3200 Jahre v.u.Z.) eine Suche in tieferen Wassern erfordert.

Dendrochronological investigations at Moving Glacier provide the first calendar-dating of a Little Ice Age glacier advance on Vancouver Island. In 1931, Moving Glacier was within 30 to 50 m of a distinct trimline and terminal moraine marking its maximum Little Ice Age extent. A reconnaissance of the site in 1993 revealed the presence of sheared in situ stumps and detrital trunks inside the 1931 ice limit. Sampling in 1994 showed the site was covered by a mature subalpine forest prior to the glacial advance which overrode the site after 1718 A.D. Following this period of expansion, which saw Moving Glacier expand to its maximum Little Ice Age position after 1818 A.D., the glacier apparently experienced only minimal retreat prior to first being photographed in 1931.

Des recherches en dendrochronologie menées sur le glacier Moving ont permis de dater l'évolution d'un glacier au Petit Âge glaciaire. En 1931, Le glacier Moving était situé entre 30 et 50 m d'un épaulement et d'une moraine frontale correspondant à sa limite d'expansion maximale au Petit Âge glaciaire. L'exploration du site en 1993 a permis de découvrir des souches et des débris de bois in situ à l'intérieur de la limite glaciaire de 1931. Un échantillonnage effectué en 1994 a montré que le site était recouvert d'une forêt subalpine mûre avant l'avancée glaciaire qui a bouleversé le site après 1718 ap. J.-C. Après la période d'expansion, qui a permis au glacier d'atteindre sa limite maximale après 1818 ap. J.-C, le glacier a connu un recul minimal avant d'être photographié en 1931.

Dendrochnronologische Forschungen am Moving-Gletscher ergeben die erste Kalenderdatierung eines GletschervorstoBes wâhrend der kleinen Eiszeit auf der Insel Vancouver. 1931 befand sich der Moving-Gletscher innerhalb der 30 bis 50 m einer klaren Abflachung und der Endmorâne, was seiner maximalen Ausdehnung in der kleinen Eiszeit entsprach. 1993 fand man bei der Erkundung des Platzes in situ abgescherte Baumstùmpfe und Trùmmer von Baumstâmmen innerhalb der Eisgrenze von 1931. 1994 zeigte eine Probenentnahme, daf3 der Platz mit einem ausgewachsenen subalpinen WaId bewachsen war, bevor der glaziale VorstoB den Platz nach 1718 u.Z. verwandelte. Nach dieser Ausdehnungs-periode, in welcher der Moving-Gletscher nach 1818 u.Z. seine maximale Position in der kleinen Eiszeit erreichte, hat der Gletscher offenbar nur einen minimalen Rùckzug vollzogen, bevor er 1931 zum 1. Mal photographiert wurde.

II existe un lambeau de la ligne de rivage Micmac à la pointe aux Alouettes, près de l'embouchure du Saguenay. À cet endroit, on observe une basse terrasse, à 6 m d'altitude, au pied d'une falaise morte. Il s'agit de la falaise Micmac de Goldthwait et de la terrasse Mitis de Dionne. La basse terrasse constitue une forme polygénique qui a été édifiée en deux phases. Dans un premier temps, les agents d'érosion littoraux ont taillé une plate-forme et une falaise dans la terrasse limono-argileuse locale. Dans un deuxième temps, des dépôts intertidaux fins et des dépôts grossiers littoraux ont été accumulés sur cette surface fossilisant alors la falaise et la plate-forme d'érosion. Après l'emersion de la terrasse, survenue il y a un millénaire environ, des cônes de déjection (coulées boueuses) ont été édifiés à la sortie des ravins entaillant la falaise morte. Par endroits, à distance du pied de la falaise, des nappes de colluvions de ruissellement recouvrent la surface originelle. L'âge médian des sédiments intertidaux est de 1,4 ka, celui des plages, en surface, de 1,3 ka. À la pointe aux Alouettes, la terrasse Mitis est environ 600 ans plus jeune qu'ailleurs sur les rives du Saint-Laurent estuarien. Malgré un taux moyen d'émersion des terres de 5,7 mm/an, l'érosion a grugé la terrasse à un rythme d'environ 100 cm/an au cours des trois dernières décennies.

There is a remnant of the Micmac shoreline at Pointe aux Alouettes, at the entry of the Saguenay fjord. This shoreline is composed of the Goldthwait's Micmac cliff and of the Dionne's Mitis terrace. The low terrace is a polygenic feature built in two stages. During the first episode erosional shore processes cut a platform and a cliff into the local silty-clayey 20-m terrace. During the second episode, fine-grained intertidal deposits and coarsegrained shore deposits accumulated on the platform and isolated the former cliff. Whence emerged, about a thousand years ago, alluvial cones (mud flows) were built at the outlet of small ravines cut into the Micmac cliff. Locally and away from the base of cliff, thin sheets of rainwash colluvium progressively accumulated over the former terrace surface. The mean radiocarbon age of the intertidal and shore deposits is respectively 1.4 and 1.3 ka. At Pointe aux Alouettes, the Mitis terrace is about 600 years younger than elsewhere along the St. Lawrence estuary. Despite a recent mean rate of land emergence 5.7 mm/yr during the last three decades, the mean annual erosion rate of the Mitis terrace has been approximately 100 cm.

Es handelt sich um die Micmac-Steilkùste von Goldwaith und die Mitis-Terrasse von Dionne. Die niedrige Terrasse bildet eine polygene Form, die in zwei Phasen aufgebaut wurde. Zuerst haden die Erosionsprozesse am Ufer eine Plattform und eine Steilkûste in die ortliche, schlammig-lehmige Terrasse geschnitten. AnschlieBend sammelten sich auf dieser Oberflâche feine Gezeitenablagerungen und grobe Uferablagerungen und haben derart die Steilkûste und die Erosions-plattform fossilisiert. Nach dem Auftauchen der Terrasse, das vor ungefàhr einem Jahrtausend eingetreten ist, wurden am Ausgang der in die tote Terrasse eingeschnittenen Gràben Schuttkegel errichtet. Stellen-weise und vom Fu3 der Steilkûste entfemt bedecken Flàchen von Regenspùlungs-Gehàngeschutt die ursprùngliche Oberflâche. Das mittlere Alter der Gezeitensedimente ist 1,4 ka, das der Strandsedimente an der Oberflâche 1,3 ka. Bei der Pointe aux Alouettes ist die Mitis-Terrasse etwa 600 Jahre jûnger als sonst an den Ufern der Sankt-Lorenz-Gezeitenmùndung. Trotz einer durch-schnittlichen Auftauchrate des Landes von 5,7 mm/Jahr hat die Erosion die Terrasse in einem Rhythmus von ungefàhr 100 cm/Jahr im Laufe der drei letzten Jahrzehnte vermindert.

Fragmentary but massive left and right horncores, found with eight post-cranial bones, from a clay unit underlying a diamicton of the last (Fraser) glaciation at Chuchi Lake, British Columbia probably represents an individual giant bison (Bison cf. B. latifrons). A sample of bone from one of the horncores yielded an accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon date of 30 740 ± 220 BP, whereas overlapping dates from two other laboratories on an associated humerus are 34 800 ± 420 BP and 35 480 ± 1080 BP. Despite the discrepancy between horncore and humerus dates, they are in accord with the suspected stratigraphie age of the clay unit whence they came. Analysis of pollen from that clay unit indicates that bison with massive horns once occupied an open forest in the vicinity. Probably giant bison and Columbian mammoths (incorporating paleoenvironmental evidence found with the nearby, penecontemporaneous Babine Lake mammoth) shared lake-dotted open forest to shrub tundra range in what is now central British Columbia toward the close of the Middle Wisconsinan (Olympia Nonglacial Interval). The Chuchi Lake specimen is important because it is the first indication of giant bison from British Columbia, and it appears to be one of the latest known survivors of this species.

On a trouvé au lac Chuchi dans une unité d'argile recouverte d'un diamicton de la dernière glaciation (Fraser), des fragments de noyaux de cornes droite et gauche et des ossements postcrâniens qui pourraient provenir du bison géant (Bison cf. B. latifrons). Un échantillon d'un des noyaux de corne a été daté au radiocarbone par spectrométrie de masse par accélérateur à 30 740 ± 220 BP, alors qu'un humérus du même horizon a été daté dans deux différents laboratoires à 34 800 ± 420 BP et 35 480 ± 1080 BP. Malgré la différence entre les dates du noyau de corne et de l'humérus, celles-ci concordent avec l'âge stratigraphique présumé de l'unité d'argile où les ossements ont été trouvés. L'analyse du pollen de la même unité d'argile indique que le bison vivait dans une forêt ouverte. Selon les données paléoenvironnementales du Babine Lake, où on a trouvé un mammouth du même âge, il est probable que le bison et le mammouth colombien partageaient un milieu variant entre la forêt ouverte et la toundra arbustive parsemée de lacs, au centre de la Colombie-Britannique, pendant le Wisconsinien moyen (intervalle non glaciaire de l'Olympia). La découverte du spécimen du Chuchi Lake est d'autant plus importante qu'il constitue le premier indice de la présence du bison géant en Colombie-Britannique; il pourrait être parmi les derniers survivants de cette espèce.

Fragmentarische aber massive linke und rechte Hornkerne zusammen mit acht Hinterschâdelknochen, die man in einer Lehm-Einheit unter einem Diamikton der letzten Vereisung (Fraser) am See Chuchi, British Columbia, gefunden hat, kônnten wohl von einem einzelnen Riesenbison stammen (Bison ci. B. latifrons). Fur eine Knochenprobe von einem der Hornkerne wurde mittels Massenspek-trometrie durch Beschleuniger ein Radiokarbondatum von 30 740 ± 220 v.u.Z. ermittelt, wâhrend zwei andere Labore sich ùberschneidende Daten auf einem damit in Verbindung gebrachten Oberarmknochen ermittelten: 34 800 ± 420 v.u.Z. und 35 480 ± 1080 v.u.Z. Trotz der Diskrepanz zwischen den Hornkern- und Oberarmknochendaten, stimmen sie mit dem vermuteten stratigraphischen Alter der Lehmeinheit, aus der sie stammen, ûberein. Die Pollen-Analyse von dieser Lehmeinheit zeigt, daf3 ehemals Bisons mit massiven Hôrnern in einem offenen WaId in der Nàhe lebten. Gegen Ende des mittleren Wisconsiniums (nichtglaziales Intervall von Olympia) teilten sich wahrscheinlich Riesenbisons und kolumbianische Mammuts (wenn man die Palàoumweltbelege von Babine Lake berùcksichtigt, wo man ein Mammut des gleichen Alters gefunden hat) ein Gebiet, das von Seen durchsetzten offenen WaId bis zur Buschtundra enthielt und dem heutigen Zentrum von British Columbia entspricht. Das Exemplar von Chuchi Lake ist wichtig, weil es der erste Hinweis auf Riesenbison von British Columbia ist, und es scheint eines der letzten bekannten Ùberlebenden dieser Art zu sein.

Bluefish Caves I, II and III of northern Yukon, have yielded the earliest in situ evidence of human occupation of Eastern Beringia, associated with one of the largest and most diverse Late Pleistocene faunas recovered in the region. This paper presents data derived from the study of a large sample of horse teeth recovered from the three caves. This research contributes to our knowledge of the Late Pleistocene Beringian equid, Equus lambei. A comparison of the dentition of E. lambei with that of some contemporary European horses, indicates they have similar size cheekteeth. The hypothesis of a Late Pleistocene trend of size reduction in equids is considered in the light of this comparison.

Les grottes du Poisson Bleu présentent les témoins les plus anciens découverts in situ d'une occupation humaine en Béringie orientale, associés à la faune la plus nombreuse et diversifiée trouvée dans la région. On présente ici les données issues de l'étude d'un important échantillon de dents de cheval récupérées dans les trois grottes. Cette recherche contribue à enrichir nos connaissances sur Equus lambei. La comparaison de la dentition de Equus lambei avec celle des chevaux contemporains d'Europe montre que leur dents sont de taille similaire. À la faveur de cette comparaison l'hypothèse d'une réduction de la taille des équidés survenue au Pleistocene supérieur est envisagée.

Die Bluefish-Grotten I, II und III von Nord-Yukon haben den frùhesten Beleg in situ ùber menschliche Besiedlung von Ost-Bering erbracht, in Verbindung mit einer der bedeutendsten und abwechslungsreichsten Fauna des spàten Pleistozàns, die man in diesem Gebiet finden konnte. Dieser Aufsatz stellt Daten vor, die bei der Studie einer bedeutenden Sammlung von Pferdezàhnen aus den drei Grotten gewonnen wurden. Dièse Forschungsarbeit bereichert unsere Kenntnisse ùber Equus lambei im spàten Pleistozân. Ein Vergleich der Dentition von E. lambei mit der einiger zeitgenôssischer europâischer Pferde zeigt, da(3 ihre Backenzâhne fast gleicher GrôRe sind. Die Hypothèse, daf3 im spàten Pleistozân ein Trend zum Kleinerwerden der Pferde bestand, wird im Licht dieses Vergleichs in Erwâgung gezogen.
