The research presented in this paper aims to study the impact of reading skills on students' comprehension of different types of mathematical problem statements. To reach this goal, three problem statements in arithmetics were created, each written in four different versions in order to alter the type of information included in the statements. These word problems were submitted to 6th grade students (11-12 years old) of 17 French-speaking schools in Quebec. Results indicate that the type of information included in the statement influences the way students' learning skills affect their comprehension of the problem.

AbstractThis article discusses the question of interpreting and developing a training sequence. The author presents an example of a sequence whose objective is that of interpreting and developing training sequences. Following a survey, the author presents a reading guide for future use. This guide proposes three questions : How does the sequence fit within the educational space ? How to interpret the sequence at a specific moment in its history ? How can one examine those effective and potential zones for development that are implied ?

In the aftermath of a conference on the history of educational development in the communities of Ivujivik and Puvirnituq and a process of reviewing their teacher training program, some Inuit educa tion leaders have requested a review of the current math program in their schools in order to integrate Inuit mathematical knowledge into it. This paper is meant to be an initial reflection on how that request relates to movements by these communities to take over education. It will also address curriculum-related developments that have occurred in these territories and elsewhere in the country. Furthermore, it will deal with the epistemological dimension of different types of mathematical knowledge produced by different cultural worlds and ask how they can interrelate to each other. Finally, this paper will cover the contribution by university partners to joint endeavours and processes that have been ongoing for more than 30 years with the education stakeholders of the communities of Ivujivik and Puvirnituq.

This research aims to deepen knowledge about learning difficulties in mathematics. According to the literature, two perspectives for interpreting these difficulties exist. The first assigns mathematical difficulties as intrinsic to the student. The second considers these difficulties as the result of the interaction between the student and the educational system. The objective of this research has been to test the significance of these perspectives. In order to achieve this, we compared the relational calculi of students at risk (N = 106) and the relational calculi of regular students (N = 416). We have also identified the influence related to the problems' characteristics and the classroom belonging. The results show that mathematical learning difficulties should be interpreted according to the second perspective.

The sociology of games and play is underdeveloped. Its main works are getting old (j. Huizinga in the 1930s; R. Caillois in the 1950s), and recent approaches as games studies do not contribute to their renewal. In this paper, live action role-playing games (LARPs) are used as a case to update theoretical frames on three levels: social research on games and plays in general; sociological concepts as the social construction of reality and frame analysis (P. Berger et Th. Luckmann; G. Bateson & E. Goffman); cross disciplinary discussion with narratology, focusing on the articulation between game and fiction (J-M. Schaeffer).
