Individual and collective identities always develop in relation to the other as different, and in this process, the otherness is always subjected to the attempts of cultivation/domestication. In the history of European thought, we can recognize three metaphors which express the impossibility of seeing the other as different: the metaphors of The Leper, The Court Fool and The Noble Savage. They developed on the basis of the relationship between the difference and common rationality, which means that a more inclusive relationship to otherness as a conversational ideal could be formed if we were able shift the emphasis of ethical discourse from the universal concept of autonomy to respect for authenticity and to Levinas's ethics of “the face of the other”. Such a step requires a radical change of discursive practices of all involved in the educational processes. That is why I propose the principle of observing the face of the other as different in both real-life experience and in expressive images of art, as well as the recognition and acceptance of otherness at the very core of our own identity.

Despite the all-embracing nature of the term "financial services", there is a clear distinction in most people’s mind between, for instance, the status of policyholders and bank customers. lndeed, the mere existence of banks and insurance companies is taken for granted. This being said, the recent changes - not to say upheavals - that have shaken the world of financial markets and institutions call for a drastic revision of our perception and understanding of the role of financial institutions. The financial markets have developed a steadily growing range of instruments and techniques that have boosted their roles in our economies. Many observers do question the benefits of this massive expansion of what they call "the virtual economy". For instance, they claim that the current pace of financial innovations may eventually lead to an increase in systemic risk. They fear significant disruptions that the proliferation of derivatives may cause to the real economy. This article challenges this view. It focuses primarily on insurance companies. Insurance policies and put options are very close relatives. This parenthood carries far-reaching implications that we try to explore in the following pages.

For Cendrars, the year 1924 was marked by two consecutive events : the discovery of Brazil where he stayed for seven months and, on his return to France, the writing of L'Or [Sutter's Gold], his first novel, in six weeks. For more than thirty years, the poet revisited this pivotal year to explore the unpredictable and necessary journey that led from the discovery of his Utopialand to his apprenticeship as a novelist. Incredibly numerous and varied in his works, the spiraling references to 1924 mirror his conception of modernity and map out his search for lost time.
