AbstractIn France, unlike in Anglo-Saxon countries, university has been for a long time the object of a sociological indifference. This article contributes to the opening of the university black box and reflects on university autonomy and adaptability to the work field. In view of this problem, the French ministry of higher education and research has created a new Web site, the Portail étudiant, to which the observatories of student life (OVE) are opposed. The analysis of the methodological conflict raises a broader questioning on the importance of territorial dimension in the construction of statistical indicators realized by the OVE.

Comparative historical sociology has never been convincingly institutionalized in Quebec Studies. Specialists of Quebec Studies, like Gérard Bouchard, have however used comparisons to better understand Quebec. Comparative historical sociology is an important method even though it remains undertheorized in Quebec. Comparative historical sociology includes, however, a significant number of risks that the researcher should be aware of when undertaking research on Quebec. The first risk relates to the transculturality of concepts, the second is to postulate the universality of social practices, and the last is about the scientific nature of a research. Nevertheless, comparative analysis as a critical method is a powerful scientific tool for the objectification of results. The comparative method is also a very effective means to criticize and improve global theories.

The following interview was made with Michel Crozier in December 2003. With a strong reputation in the academic world, he imported the sociology of organizations from the United States. He taught this field to numerous student generations. In 1966, he founded in Paris the Centre of sociology of organizations. Since forty years, he has been criticizing the irrelevant beliefs of the French society and has been calling for an enlightened pragmatism. Michel Crozier gave us his opinion on the evolution of French society with a focus on the relations of power, the bureaucratic illness, the decentralization as well as the work of the European Convention.
