Among older people with incurable cancer, men are less likely to seek support for their suffering. However, living with a terminal illness often causes significant psychological sufferings. What is known about the suffering experienced by older men with incurable cancer (OMIC)? In this article, we present the findings of a qualitative study conducted with 17 OMICs focusing on their suffering and on communication. The findings reveal that suffering can be related to what these men are told by others, what they wish to express themselves and what they feel able to communicate. The limits of speech and how transmission can be considered as another way of communicating will also be discussed.

Cette étude considère la théorie du discours de Paul Ricoeur dans le contexte d'une phénoménologie de la religion. Je me concentre sur la huitième étude de La Métaphore Vive, dans laquelle Ricoeur explore la possibilité d'interanimation entre le discours spéculatif et le discours poétique. Alors que Ricoeur considère les intéractions entre le discours religieux et le discours philosophique dans de nombreux essais, il ne développe pas la possibilité supplémentaire d'interanimation entre la pensée religieuse et la pensée spéculative. Je considère cette possibilité inexplorée, et je suggère que la métaphore est capable de se glisser entre les discours, et d'animer à la fois le discours spéculatif et le discours religieux. The aim of this article is to examine different theories of reading, writing and translation in the context of an interdisciplinary anthropology of translation from a feminist perspective and within the framework of contemporary hermeneutics. If the concept of ‘‘gender'' is a useful category to analyze social relations between the sexes, it is also a valuable reading grid to identify social constructions that reveal power relations. Indeed, the evolution of society today has put into question the gains of the feminist movement since the 1970s. Translation, in revealing practices of domination and subversion, can bring new elements to the feminist debate on power and the violence of the patriarchal tradition. Our analysis of the symbolic dimension of male-dominated hierarchy refers in particular to the work of Françoise Héritier on thought related to sexual difference in systems of representation. We shall examine metaphors of marriage and sexuality in translation in light of Lori Chamberlain's work, and begin with George Steiner's masculine model of translation. While referring to an unconscious theological dimension in translation, as shown by Jean-René Ladmiral, we shall argue that there is also an unconscious dimension of love to which it is tied and which seems to be present in all of the thinking about translation, as well as in translation studies. Other descriptions of translation in the context of love or as a sexual dialectic will also be discussed, in particular Valery Larbaud's reading and Serge Gavronsky's argument developed in psychoanalytical terms. Different feminist interpretations of translation illustrating the freedom to resist stereotypes, and therefore inequality, will be put forth in opposition to gender metaphorics in translation and Steiner's model, while opening the discussion to the question of authority. Questions of gender, sexuality and authority in translation have deep political implications, and we conclude our analysis with an argument in favour of a pluralistic view of authority.

An axiom of philosophical hermeneutics is that questioning has hermeneutic priority. Yet there are many different kinds of questions. Which sort has priority in understanding complete thoughts and for bringing about a fusion of horizons? Speech act theory is one resource for specifying which kind. I first develop the broad notion of questioning in philosophical hermeneutics. Second, I examine aspects of question taxonomies in pedagogy as well as their shortcomings. Third, I turn to the Speech Act approach to questioning and provide a challenge to this theory for adequately addressing what kind takes hermeneutic priority. I propose the category of “suspensives” as the kind of interlocutionary act definitive for questions that have hermeneutic priority.

This article advances the notion of social texture. It begins with an analysis of Dilthey's hermeneutics in order to illustrate the ambiguity he identifies between text and the role it plays in our understanding and interpretation of social life. The relationship between text and social texture is further developed by referencing the work of Pierre Legendre and his theory of the “forbidden,” of an excluded/included third party. The relationship between text and community is also analyzed as a sociological interpretation of the modalities of narration and conceptualization, which are defined first and foremost as human interactions and social relationships. To situate how a hermeneutic of social life is dialectically articulated in texts, the sociological approaches of Margaret Archer and Jeffrey C. Alexander are also examined. In the Canadian “postcolonial” context, the reweaving of relations between the country's Indigenous peoples and its settler populations is used to explain how the relationship to text operates within a hermeneutic of social texture.
