In Quebec, the relationship between social work practice and the ecological crisis, as well as its impact on vulnerable populations, are avenues that are beginning to be explored in research. This article contributes to the development of this knowledge base by sharing the findings of an exploratory research project examining social work practitioners' understanding of the connections they make between their social work practice and ecological issues. Our analysis illustrates that participants recognize the relevance of their profession faced with the ecological crisis, but that their practice setting and the manner in which the environment and nature are conceptualized within the profession can be constraining factors for facilitating “greener” social work. This article is therefore part of a collective invitation to reflect upon the social work of today and tomorrow, in light of the need to integrate environmental concerns more meaningfully into professional practice.

In this article, we investigate Canadian federal correctional officers' (CO) experiences and concerns with their prison workspaces. By drawing upon carceral geography, and recognizing the existing relationship shared between architecture, design and the lived experience of space, we consider how prison light(ing), or lack thereof, impacts the workspaces and well-being of COs. This article draws upon data generated from interviews conducted with Canadian federal COs (n=60), derived from a larger longitudinal study (Ricciardelli et al., 2021). We first illustrate how (limited) access to natural light is often the consequence of safety and security concerns, before examining the impact of this access on the work experience, as well as the health and well-being of the CO. We then turn our attention to the provision of alternative or security-minded light(ing), which often renders prison spaces over-illuminated. Taken together, the article's focus reveals an inherent lighting problem. While natural light(ing) is in particular purportedly stringently managed in the prison setting, the very nature of light renders it highly uncontrollable. Such findings illuminate the problems associated with the prison lighting that circulates within spaces of incarceration, as well as the (un)intentional and latent consequences of prison conditions for care. We close with recommendations for improving CO and prisoner well-being in relation to lighting in prison spaces.

Inclusive education advocates for considering the diverse needs of all students in order to enable each individual to develop their full potential (Conseil supérieur de l'éducation [CSE], 2017). However, the areas of action for many contributors to its implementation, including that of the special educator (CSE, 2017), are more or less delimited. This situation results in variable practices from one environment to another, leading to inequities and difficulties in accessing services (Office des professions du Québec [OPQ], 2014; Prud'homme, 2018). This article presents the results of recent Quebec studies that focused on the roles and functions of special educators. Through a methodology inspired by the integrative review approach (Whittemore and Knafl, 2005), the synthesis of these studies aims to highlight the main challenges linked to the practice of special education in the context of inclusive education. The results shed light on various role tensions that impact the deployment of professional skills of special educators in a school setting. Research perspectives to prioritize in order to support this process are proposed for the next decade.

The health measures that were ordered during the COVID-19 pandemic have had considerable repercussions for the Quebec population, which has had to adapt to this exceptional situation. In many ways, the impacts of this crisis have been amplified for school-age children with disabilities. The health measures enacted by the Quebec government have profoundly changed the educational services they have received for more than two years. This article reports on the obstacles faced by these children in asserting their right to education, without discrimination, as documented by the Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse du Québec throughout the pandemic period. More importantly, they speak to the persistent systemic barriers that still hinder the adaptation of educational services for students with disabilities.

Introduction: Over the past several years, experts have used the concept of excessive consumption, often referred to as binge to steer preventive measures, especially in the context of substance addiction. However, no one has yet explored the applicability of this early indicator to the realm of hyperconnectivity, a phenomenon that can result in excessive screen time and the development of problematic Internet use (PIU). This study seeks to validate and define the parameters of what constitutes an Internet binge episode.

Students with learning disabilities (LD) are increasingly faced with the extensive and varied use of new information and communication technology (ICT) in postsecondary education. Data from interviews conducted with 58 experts and 74 college students with LD who responded to an online questionnaire show disparities between the views of the two groups. Experts suggested scanning and optical character recognition, screen reading, audio format text, voice dictation, spelling and grammar correctors as well as concept mapping as being ICT that could be beneficial to students with TA. Students do not really use these ICT and report using less specialized technologies (eg. smart phones and MP3 files). It is appropriate to recommend an increased awareness and education of students with LD with regards to various ICT, but also of the college staff.

Problematic: Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) affects the realization of many life habits, both with children and adults. However, few studies have described the challenges faced by young adults and none have examined their needs in terms of information resources. The purpose of this exploratory study is to identify the main challenges related to the social participation of young adults with a DCD as well as the information resources that can help them. Methodology: Young adults, aged between 18 and 25 with a DCD, and parents of young adults meeting these criteria were recruited. A survey inspired by the Assessment of Life Habits (LIFE-H) was developed in collaboration with the Quebec Association for Dyspraxic Children. The data obtained was interpreted using medians and scopes, and a thematic analysis. Results: Three young adults and three parents participated in this study. Work came up in the most affected life habits of both young adults and parents. The least satisfactory life habits were travel by young adults, and work and housing by parents. Concerning information resources, young adults and parents prioritize the potential consequences of DCD on mental health and strategies to facilitate integration into school and work. The website was the preferred modality for young adults, while the parents favoured the focus group. Discussion: Despite the small sample, this study explored, for the first time in Quebec, the social participation of young adults with a DCD and their needs in terms of information resources. In collaboration with the Quebec Association for Dyspraxic Children, this knowledge will allow to develop an information resource better adapted to this stage of life.

Introduction.

To implement practices adapted to the diversity of students, operational aspects need to be examined, particularly the organization of educational services (Rousseau et al., 2017). This aspect is poorly documented in the specific context of special education (Beaulieu, 2019; Duquette, 2020; Tremblay and Granger, 2018). This article offers a reflective text supported by recent scientific literature, adopting a methodological approach inspired by integrative reviews (Whittemore and Knafl, 2005). More specifically, the results of three studies conducted in Quebec over the past five years on the organization of special education services (Boily, 2020; Granger et al., 2021; Ruberto et al., forthcoming) will be presented and analyzed transversally. The synthesis of these three Quebec studies will highlight: a) the current organization of special education services; and b) the factors related to the school environment that influence the implementation of this service. Following this reflection, research priorities will be proposed to support the development of service organizations adapted to student diversity, ensuring that they become a real lever in educational contexts.
