The Cape Smith Belt contains evidence forearly Proterozoic plate tectonics in the form of a 1998 Ma ophiolite and a thrust belt which developed during northward under thrustingof a continental rift margin. Five tectono stratigraphic suites have been recognized from north to south in the eastern portion of the belt: (l) fluviodeltaic sediments; (2) ca. 1960Ma sediments and continental tholeiiticbasalts; (3) ca. 1920 Ma transitional crustbasalts; (4) deep-water sediments; and (5) basalts, sheeted dykes and mafic and ultra-mafic cumulates of a 1998 Ma ophiolite.Suites (1 ) to (3) reflect the development of a north-facing rift margin at the edge of the Superior Province. Structures in the Cape Smith Belt record the transition during collisional deformation from (1) initial thin-skinned thrust belt growth, to (2) internal thickening of the thrust belt involving basement thrusting, and finally to (3) basement-involved, crustal-scalefolding. Overprinting deformation-metamorphism relationships allow recognition of four principal stages in the history of the thrustbelt. First, south-verging, regular (piggy-back)-sequence thrusts developed above aregional basal décollement which was localized at the basement-cover contact Second, thermal equilibration of the thrust belt(20 to 30 km thick) resulted in metamorphism and the development of a ductile shear zone at its base. Third, major out-of-sequence thrust faults internally deformed the thrust belt from pre- to post-thermal peak conditions. Finally, thrust belt deformation (D,) was followed by an episode of basement- (footwall-) involved folding (D?) which continued to accommodate the north-south shortening.

The Cape Smith Belt is a multiply-deformed thrust belt containing metamorphosed basaltic volcanic, mafic intrusive, and sedimentary rocks. It lies south of the Kovikanti form and the Sugluk block; together, these constitute the Ungava segment of theTrans-Hudson Orogen. U-Pb dating of representative units reveals that Archean rocks of the Superior craton which underlie the belt are ca. 2780-2880 Ma old, and that theoldest rocks in the belt proper are those of the Purtuniq ophiolite at 1998 ± 2 Ma. The belt evolved between ca. 2000 Ma (oceanic crust generation) and about 1830 Ma, the age of the later part of the belt's south-directed structural translation and subsequent thick-skinned deformation. The Po-vungnituk Group (the structurally lowest assemblage of sedimentary and volcanic rocks) was deposited ca. 1960 Ma, and being younger than the ophiolite, cannot be the rift assemblage which led to creation of oceanic crust of the Purtuniq ophiolite. Ages of intrusions and sedimentary rocks within the Sugluk block are as young as 1830 Ma,and they were metamorphosed and deformed at granulite faciès at 1830-1820 Ma, prior to a period of slow cooling.

The tectonostratigraphic units of the Cape Smith Belt are interpreted as having accumulated in two distinct basins: (1) an older northern oceanic basin in which the Purtuniqophiolite was formed; and (2) a younger southern Povungnituk - Chukotat basin. A comparison with present-day rifting processes suggests that the younger Povungnituk - Chukotat basin evolved as an asymmetric rift leading to the successive accumulation of the sediments of the Lamarche sub-group, the continental tholeiitic basalts of the Beauparlant subgroup, and the oceanic basalts of the Chukotat Group. In response to a north-south compression, the northern Chukotat Group basalts were probably subducted northward, thus initiating the development of a magmatic arc system (Parent Group).

The Ni-Cu-PGE sulphide deposits in the central and eastern parts of the Cape Smith Belt are best developed near the contactbetween the Povungnituk and Chukotat Groups The deposits are associated with differentiated sills and ultramafic intrusions forming part of the feeder system to the lower Chukotat Group which comprises alternating olivine and pyroxene-phyricbasalts. The intrusions were emplaced near or at the axis of an oceanic proto-rift. In the Cape Smith Belt, a highly alkaline sequence of volcanic rocks overlies the tholeiitic basalts of the Povungnituk Group. This sequence consists of basanites/nephe-linites and phonolites. All lavas display high Zr, Nb, Ti values, and the mafic lavas containprimary titaniferous clinopyroxene. Crystal fractionation models indicate that the evolution of the mafic lavas was dominated by clinopyroxene fractionation. The phonolites are most reasonably interpreted as products of extensive fractionation of feldspar from abasanitic parent.

The Cape Smith alkaline suite is similar toPhanerozoic undersaturated lava suites and is interpreted as part of an alkaline volcanic island developed on the continental margin of an opening oceanic rift basin. The chemistry of the alkaline rocks from the Cape Smith Belt suggests similar processes for the generation alkaline melts in the Proterozoic and Phanerozoic mantle.

Macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of the Roméo 1 and 2 sills in the Cape Smith Belt suggest a multiphase magmatic origin for these two ultramafic to mafic layered bodies. Nonetheless, cryptic variations within olivines and clino pyroxenes and a comparison study between the Roméo 1lower chill margin and its weighted bulk composition shows that the intrusion resulted from the in situ crystallization of a single magma syngenetic with the emplacement of the komatiitic basalts of the Chukotat Group. A comparison with Roméo 2 and several other sills in the Cape Smith Belt indicates that these differentiated peridotite-gabbrobodies have all, more or less, undergone asimilar magmatic history.

A sequence of rocks representing obducted oceanic crust (an ophiolite) has been identified in the Cape Smith Belt. The physical and chemical nature of this 1998 Ma ophiolite is similar to rocks from Phanerozoic ophiolites and modern oceans, implying that tectonic processes similar to those operating today were active nearly two billion years ago. At that time, northern Quebec may have been tectonically similar to the modern Red Sea.

The Trans-Hudson Orogen in Canada represents an early Proterozoic mountain belt similar to Phanerozoic orogens formed by plate tectonic processes. Volcanic rocks in northern Manitoba and Saskatchewan resemble island arc terranes, while continental rift and oceanic volcanic rocks dominate in the Cape Smith Belt in northern Quebec. Pb-Pb whole rock isotopic data for the ophiolitic Watts Group of the Cape Smith Belt yield an age of 1980 ± 30 Ma. Pb-Pb metamorphic (?) ages of 1890 Ma and 1700Ma were determined for rift-related igneous rocks of the Povungnituk Group and transitional volcanic rocks of the Chukotat Group, respectively. Sm-Nd isotopic compositionsare consistent with a magmatic evolution characterized by involvement of lithosphericmantle in Povungnituk Group volcanism, and depleted asthenospheric magmasources for MORB-like Chukotat Groupbasalts Sm-Nd isotopic compositions of the Watts Group show the characteristics of both Povungnituk and Chukotat Groupbasalts, suggesting similar sources.

In the Cape Smith Belt, lower green schistto middle-amphibolite facies metabasites are exposed in an oblique cross-section displaying over 18 km of structural relief. Mapping of regional mineral isograds has documented the nature and relative timing of the thermal responses to southward directed crustal thickening. In the belt's foreland, hot-side-down metamorphism followed a stage of regular-sequence thrusting. Syn-thermal peak out-of-sequence thrusting was reponsible for local inversion of the isograds in the foot wall of the out-of-sequence domain. In the belt's hinterland, post-thermal peak out-of-sequence faulting produced pervasive retrogression to green schist facies and truncation of the thermal peak isograds.

Reimbrication of the internal part ol the Cape Smith Thrust Belt has resulted in the development of two distinct structural-metamorphic domains. In a southern (regular-sequence thrusting) domain, thermal peak metamorphism occurred after deformation,while in a northern (out-of-sequence thrusting) domain, it occurred during deformation(/.e., re-imbrication). The interactions of tectonic and thermal processes have been studied using three methods: (1) qualitative evaluation of the timing between mineral growth and deformation; (2) analytical P-T paths from growth-zoned garnets; and (3) numerical modelling of vertical heat conduction. Analytical P-T paths suggest that uplift in the regular-sequence domain resulted primarily from erosion and isostatic unloading.In contrast, P-T paths in the out-of-sequence domain indicate that the northern portion of the thrust belt experienced faster unroofing relative to the regular-sequence domain.This has been attributed to both ramping of the out-of-sequence thrusts at deeper structural levels and possibly to extensional faulting at higher structural levels. Field and thin-section observations on the timing of metamorphism coupled with numerical modelling suggests that the thermal peak metamorphism documented in the regular-sequence domain is a consequence of the emplacement of the out-of-sequence thrust stack.

The rheological and structural consequences of thrust belt metamorphism have been studied using both numerical thermalrheological models and field and thin-section observations on ductile thrust zones in the Early Proterozoic Cape Smith Thrust Belt. Development of these ductile thrust zones had several important consequences for the evolution of the thrust belt: (1) penetrative bulk shear deformation of both hanging wall and footwall units leading to the development of mylonitic foliations; and (2) movement on a restricted number of relatively large displacement thrusts. Relatively broad ductile shear zones developed adjacent to thrusts during prograde metamorphism in order to accommodate movement on the thrusts, while relatively narrow shearzones developed adjacent to thrusts during retrograde metamorphism. The results of both the field studies and the thermal-rheological models suggest that temperature- (and time-) dependent weakening processes are strongly accentuated by lithological contrasts.

Molluscs are among the most ubiquitous fossils found in Quaternary non-marinesediments. They are found in a wide variety of deposits including: loess, cave, sinkhole and fissure deposits; fluvial, lacustrine, glaciolacustrine and paludal sediments; and spring-fed travertine accumulations.

In spite of problems associated with identification of some species from shell morphology alone and a general inadequacy in our understanding of the factors controlling modern species distribution, Quaternary studies of non-marine molluscs have resulted in some significant contributions. In North America fossil molluscs have been used to: (1) reconstruct former stream confluences; (2) provide a basis for biostratigraphic zonation of sedimentary sequences in the Lake Michigan, Superior and Huronbasins; and (3) reconstruct local habitat and climatic conditions. Isotopic data obtainedf rom the analysis of mollus can shell has provided information about the environment in which the molluscs lived. Amino acid stud-ies of the shell protein have provided infor-mation about the age of fossil assemblagesand a method for estimating post depositional effective temperature histories of fossil sites.

One of the basic problems in Quaternary biogeography concerns the timing, the nature, and the magnitude of biotic changes that accompanied glacial advances and retreats. The ubiquity of non-marine molluscsin Quaternary sediments provides an excellent opportunity to study effects of both short and long scale climatic fluctuations on at least one important part of the non-marinebiota, the molluscs.

Serpentine forms seamounts which rise asdiapirs in the Mariana fore-arc of the western Pacific. These have been imaged by side-scan sonar and sampled by dredging, sub-mersible dives and most recently by drillingin Leg 125 of the Ocean Drilling Program.The crust beneath the world's ocean basins is not dominated by serpentinite, so where do these serpentine seamounts come from? And where is this serpentine's water from? Water is incorporated into ocean crust inhydrous minerals like the serpentines and insediments on the mid-ocean ridges, and then travels with the spreading sea floor tosubduction zones, like the Mariana and Bonin Arcs. The water is released as sediment is squeezed and as hydrous minerals are heated in the down-going slab, and sometimes rises to serpentinize the ultra-mafic rocks of the overlying mantle wedge,so that serpentinite diapirs form which riseto the sea floor above. H.H. Hess once proposed that Layer 3 of the ocean crust was serpentinized mantle — serpentinized at mid-ocean ridges when water from inside the earth hydrated olivines and pyroxenesas the temperature cooled below 500°Cnear the sea floor. This hypothesis didn't stand up to subsequent tests, but Hess'proposal does seem to work in different circumstances in some island arc settings Andso, for example, we ask here if serpentinite-rich sediments are the products of ancient seamounts in Appalachian ophiolites?

Serpentine doesn't merely affect islandarcs, ocean floors and ophiolites — it is mined as asbestos. And so in the mines ofthe Eastern Townships of Quebec serpentine unwittingly set the scene for the meeting of Jean Marchand, Gérard Pelletier and Pierre Elliott Trudeau in the great asbestos strike of 1949 — "La Grève des Amiantes",an usher, a prelude a political revolution, Quebec's Quiet Revolution.

Fungi are ubiquitous in Quaternary fossiliferous deposits. Most are incidentally encountered during paleobotanical, including palynological, and paleozoological procedures and are rarely studied. Yet, explicitly paleomycological investigations reveal that fungi have considerable potential to provide data sharpening the focus of biotic and environmental reconstructions hitherto based solely on the more traditional paleontological evidence.

Rain-induced landslides are a major geological hazard in the Canadian Cordillera that impact directly on the economic infrastructure of the region. In July 1988, heavy rains triggered debris flows and related sediment-water flow processes which severed the Alaska Highway in three areas: Muncho Lake, BC, Rancheria, Yukon, and Kluane Lake, Yukon. The events paralysed travel in the region for several days. In addition, the heavy rainfall caused wide spread landsliding over a large area of the northern Cordillera. One of the largest events was acomplex failure at Nahanni Butte, NWT Debris flows originating in the steep watersheds of the Sentinel Range of the RockyMountains severed the highway at six locations in the vicinity of Muncho Lake. At Kluane Lake, the highway was severed innumerous places by debris flows and related processes and at one location, near theSlims River, a debris flow covered over 500 m of highway. A large landslide, covering nearly 2 km2, threatened a National Parkranger station near Nahanni Butte. North-east of the station a large mobile mudflow travelled almost 2 km to the Liard River. The direct cost of restoring the Alaska Highway was in the order of $1.8 M. The paper points to the vulnerability of transportation facilities in mountainous terrain where the location ofroutes necessarily involves the traversing of active geomorphic surfaces.
