AbstractIdeology of Cultural Homogeneity in Japanexe PrehistoryIt is held by many Japanese, including a former prime minister who caused an international stir by his remark, that the strength of the Japanese nation lies in its cultural and ethnie homogeneity. While cultural homogeneity in the small island nation with the fast communications network may be close to reality today, this has not always been the case in the past. The cultural and ethnie homogeneity of Japan holds true, even today, only because the existence of cultural and ethnie minorities is dismissed from the consciousness of the majority of Japanese. Yet, the ideology of cultural homogeneity is reflected not only in the nation's immigration and naturalization policies, but also in the way archaeological materials are interpreted and organized into a narrative of national history. As the examples show, in the books addressed to the général reading public on Japanese prehistory, from the Palaeolithic to the Yayoi Periods, the image of the présent is projected back to the past to create the long history of the culturally homogeneous Japanese people. This in turn contributes towards the maintenance of the ideology of cultural and ethnie homogeneity of the Japanese nation.

AbstractFor the interpreter, preparing for an interpretation is of utmost importance since it is directly linked with the quality of the interpretation? How long the interpreter prepares depends on the interpreter experience, the difficulty of the subject as well as well the time available before the actual interpretation takes place. The purpose of this article is to research the objective and means of preparation as well as the variables which influence the preparation phase and the evolution in preparation methods. A special emphasis will be placed on the importance of Internet use during preparation, which areas to concentrate on during preparation and how to manage each different case. These are all factors that should be taken into account when teaching student interpreters.

SummaryNearly 4 years after launching the International Rice Genome Sequencing Project (IRGSP), the rice genome sequence is almost completed. This is the second plant genome after Arabidopsis thaliana and one expect that it is more representative of other cereal genomes. Indeed, no more than 4 sequences have been independently reported as a result of a tough competition between economy, politics and media. The efficiency and impact of this way of managing a large scale project is questionable. This paper reports the various phases in sequencing rice genome as well as what we start to learn.
