931.More information
Ten years after his death, Frank Zappa remains an enigma and a veritable mass of contradictions. Known by adolescents for his rock music with themes at times brazen and at times obscene, he is respected for his fierce social criticism as well as for his works of "serious" music—which were always overshadowed by his scandalous persona. In its shortsightedness, the media unfortunately focused on Zappa's celebrity status, ignoring all other facets of his multidimensional oeuvre. In this paper, the author outlines Zappa's biography, focusing principally on his experiences in the vast domain of "serious" music; the author further reminds us that, from the discovery of Varèse's music to his encounter with l'Ensemble Modern, Zappa's path crosses those of Zubin Metha, Pierre Boulez and Kent Nagano.
