In certain family contexts, a daughter who has been victimized can become a violent mother through a non-rescue attitude: the disavowal and blindness of a mother towards her own daughter, repeating the victimization, is for us a specific form of violence, which has an impact on the building of the femininity as much as the mother-daughter relationship. We show it based on Alice' case, 17 years old, followed in psychotherapy by one of us in a Victim Support Service, with an analysis of the transferential conditions which allowed her to get out of the transgenerational repetition and to question her femininity.

The onset of an anxiety attack disrupts the spatial grasp of the world and invites us to focus our attention on what soothes it, the non-human environment (Searles 1960). From this experience arises the desire to translate the disorder, outside the linear framework of the narrative. Fragmentary writing, through its non-totalizing vision, creates a decentering of the traumatic event off-frame, focusing attention on what can be assembled in a dynamic relationship. A relationship constructed through back-and-forth movement between writing and reading in the uncharted space of the unconscious, making room for moments of suspension and latency to engage in stories not fixed once and for all but resonate from one unconscious to another, and grow like life itself. Fragmentary writing, through its work of editing and connection, thus appears as a form of narrative ecology, creating empathetic connections with others and the environment and acting as a means of reconciliation with the world.

AbstractIn this paper, the authors explain why Interpersonal Psychotherapy (PTI) is a particularly apt psychosocial treatment for depression in older adults ; they discuss issues that can emerge in the process of implementing PTI with older adults ; review the research conducted on older adults treated with PTI, and present two case summaries to illustrate the application of PTI to this population. PTI suits depressed older adults especially well because its foci match many of the issues that older adults face and that for some can trigger depression. In addition, PTI is a good fit for older adults because of its psychoeducational component, use of the medical paradigm, and collaborative, problem-focused, time-limited nature. PTI necessitates very little adaptation for older adults but should be informed by knowledge of gerontology and geropsychology. Some research and their clinical practice suggest that acute (i.e., weekly) PTI reduces depression symptoms in older adults but more research needs to be conducted. Interpersonal Counseling, a modified version of PTI, has been found to be effective in the treatment of depressive symptoms in older adults with medical problems. Continuation/Maintenance (i.e., monthly) PTI has been shown to be beneficial to some but not all older adults with major depression. Two cases are described that illustrate the implementation of PTI. One case focuses on interpersonal disputes and the other focuses on role transition.

AbstractThis article presents the first year's thoughts of an ad hoc committee formed by clinicians and researchers whose mandate is to think about criminology's possible professionalization. It also discusses the results of a survey completed by 340 Quebec criminologists, who for the most part work in the Centres Jeunesse, for the Solicitor General of Canada, in community organizations, for the Public Security Department, or in rehabilitation/detoxification centers. These criminologists are confronted with multiple ethical dilemmas, and feel the need to create guidelines and improved regulation mechanisms for their practices. The article's conclusions first highlight that criminologists' university training qualifies them to perform acts already carried out by a certain number of professionals. The conclusions also emphasize the need for criminologists' acts to be supervised by continuing education mechanisms and by a deontological code, particularly given that the rights and the interests of victims, delinquents and community are generally all concerned by those decisions often taken in an authority context and involving numerous risks of prejudice.

Victims of crime suffer tremendous psychological damage as a result of the trauma that they experience. The effects can be totally debilitating and can destroy their lives. The author discusses the reactions, symptoms of acute stress and stages of recovery of crime victims. She also discusses post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD), and the kind of help victims need to recover from their injuries. Finally, she suggests how mental health professionals in particular and society in general could better respond to crime victims.
