    This article highlights part of my work with ten 16 and 17-year-olds at two Canadian secondary schools. My multiple case study sought to make visible my participants’ stories of place: how did they construe the role of place within their own lives? How did they record their journeys within, through, and between places? I share how my participants articulated their place-identities as dynamic encounters rather than fixed surfaces (Massey, 2005; Ingold, 2016). Employing story-mapping as a research method encouraged my participants to articulate their lives in their own terms, affording me the opportunity to understand how they negotiated their identities.

    To understand the authoritarian turn of neoliberalism in Brazil during the Bolsonaro government, the article examines how neoliberal reforms are composed with a historically situated political rationality: the military logic of war on the internal enemy. The article first lists the neoliberal reform projects proposed by Economy Minister Paulo Guedes during the first three months of his administration. Second, it maps the participation of the military in the Bolsonaro government and analyzes the emergence of the military logic of war on the internal enemy during the Military Dictatorship (1964-1985), its metamorphosis in war on drugs throughout the New Republic and its updating through “pacification” operations. Finally, the article shows how neoliberal and military rationalities are composed in the Brazilian authoritarian turn, creating, on one side, mutual reinforcement, and, on the other, blockades that put Brazilian democracy in check.

    Alain Doucet, Acadian folklorist, died suddenly in 1966 at age 36, just a few months after having celebrated the publication of La littérature orale de la Baie Sainte-Marie. It was in 1961 that Doucet obtained an M.A. in French from Université Sainte-Anne after submitting a dissertation reflecting years of research on the folktales, songs, legends, place names and expressions of the area's Acadian population. His study then became a hugely successful publication. This important documentary work greatly contributed to the preservation and promotion of the region's folk heritage and it remains, even today, the most extensive ethnological study of the Acadians in the Clare region of Nova Scotia. Despite his short life, this passionate researcher left behind a lasting legacy.

    Brazilian race relations have been characterized as harmonious, in contrast with those of the United States, by a long line of scholars, from Gilberto Freyre to his latter-day critic, Marvin Harris. Harris, while castigating Freyre for a too-rosy view of relations between blacks and whites during the slavery era, argues that Brazilian race relations today are “remarkably free from conflict”. Indeed, he says, Brazilian racial terminology precludes the possibility of widespread or serious racism. The terminology comprises hundreds of categories and is applied differently by different individuals, depending on their wealth or on how the categories are perceived by the person doing the categorizing. This is contrasted with the relatively rigid, black-white distinctions of the United States, where ancestry is said to be the criterion of racial placement. The present critique of Harris' position is based on research in Cabo Verde, a Portuguese colony until 1975. This archipelago, located some three hundred miles from the African coast in the Atlantic, has an Afro-Portuguese, Creole-speaking population of some 280 000. Racial terminology was studied using the same technique as that designed and used by Harris for his work in Brazil. It was found to resemble the Brazilian one in that it included many categories that were employed differently by different individuals. Under colonial rule, Cabo Verde had a class-colour hierarchy similar to that of Brazil, in that lighter skin colour and so-called “white features” were associated with higher class status. Evidence is given to show that racism in the form of stereotypes and discriminatory practices was prevalent despite this “multi-category” racial terminology. The class System of Cabo Verde is described, and the relationship between class and race discussed; i.e., how racism was an essential support of the colonial class System, and the ways in which different classes were implicated in the dominant racial ideology. (As in Brazil, one tenet of that ideology was that racism did not exist in the society). Evidence is adduced to suggest that in Brazil, racial stereotypes and discriminatory practices also occur. Harris is criticized for overstating the variety and ambiguity of Brazilian terminology, while failing to relate terminology with everyday social practice in different contexts. This, along with an inadequate notion of ideology, lead him to perceive Brazilian race relations in a way that is little different from the favoured image of that nation's propagandists.

    Objective – While storytime programs for preschool children are offered in nearly all public libraries in the United States, little is known about the books librarians use in these programs. This study employed text analysis to explore topics and genres of books recommended for public library storytime programs.Methods – In the study, the researchers randomly selected 429 children books recommended for preschool storytime programs. Two corpuses of text were extracted from the titles, abstracts, and subject terms from bibliographic data. Multiple text mining methods were employed to investigate the content of the selected books, including term frequency, bi-gram analysis, topic modeling, and sentiment analysis.Results – The findings revealed popular topics in storytime books, including animals/creatures, color, alphabet, nature, movements, families, friends, and others. The analysis of bibliographic data described various genres and formats of storytime books, such as juvenile fiction, rhymes, board books, pictorial work, poetry, folklore, and nonfiction. Sentiment analysis results reveal that storytime books included a variety of words representing various dimensions of sentiment.Conclusion – The findings suggested that books recommended for storytime programs are centered around topics of interest to children that also support school readiness. In addition to selecting fictionalized stories that will support children in developing the academic concepts and socio-emotional skills necessary for later success, librarians should also be mindful of integrating informational texts into storytime programs.

    The smart city is a fashionable concept which is involved in many territorial marketing strategies. For a municipality,
claiming to be a smart city is a symbol of modernity that involves attractiveness, jobs in technological fields and more efficient urban management.
This urban shift would be made with respect for democracy and sustainable development. At least, this is the idea which is more or
less formally expressed in most of the writings on the subject. In this paper, we will take a critical look at the smart city concept by pointing
out that the practices associated with it could experience drifts.

    The computer-assisted assessment (CAA) should take a more and more important place in educational field during the next years. This article adopts a bias in favor of the CAA while exposing the principal advantages and putting emphasis on only certain obstacles to the implementation of CAA in the context of the secondary teaching in Quebec. This article presents a critical synthesis of computer-assisted assessment highlighting the seven following themes: the assessment's moment, the rating, the item banks and the item selection, items and their treatment, the psychological factors linked to CAA, follow-up on the students and the associated costs.

    Anticosti Island (Québec, Canada) submitted its nomination proposal for United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage status while conducting an in-depth reflection on its future and development. This decision, taken at a critical point in its history, was influenced by a desire to preserve its exceptional natural and cultural environment, and the quality of life of its inhabitants. While World Heritage designation can provide protection and enhance the quality and reputation of a touristic destination, it also raises issues linked to the change of pace, local impacts, and sustained commitment from stakeholders. How can these emerging challenges be transformed into tools for development and protection? After presenting the history of tourism on Anticosti, this article discusses the relationship between World Heritage Site designation and tourism, as well as the means provided by the nomination process to take care of the community and its heritage.
