In Haiti, songs, widely sung by women, accompany almost every gesture of daily life, especially those related to domestic activities. This paper presents the results of research carried out on Haitian women living in Montreal. What types of songs do they sing in a culture not their own? Is there a modification of their traditional repertoire or does it remain the same? What social functions do these songs have in their original culture and in their culture of adoption? Are songs passed on to the next generation born in Montreal and, if so, how are they transmitted? This study will attempt to answer these questions.

At the start of the covid-19 pandemic, several people changed the lyrics of well-known songs, recorded their performances, and then uploaded their parodies to social networks. Our survey identified 166 Quebec song parodies related to covid-19 that were published on YouTube between March 13, 2020 and June 7, 2021. Using a convergent mixed methods design, the corpus is described qualitatively and quantitatively in our article. The results are then compared with other similar studies carried out in various countries, to determine the features specific to Quebec for this specific type of publicly-shared vocal production. In particular, our analyses show that Quebec song parodies linked to covid-19 represent a sudden and short-lived phenomenon fueled by professional or amateur singers, and comedians. In conclusion, we aim to explain the contrast between the predominant proportion of parodies of Quebec songs and the higher number of viewings of parodies of foreign music.
